I would like to work on this piece by Chopin. Does anyone recognize it? I don't think I've heard it before and the difficulty level is what I'm interested in (the music starts at 00:30):

It's the etude op. 25 #1. It's not an easy piece to pull off at performance tempo but still within the means of a late-intermediate player. What is the most difficult piece you've played yet?

Jazzyprof - Granted this is probably one of the easier etudes - but I question whether its really something that a late-intermediate player would be equipped to handle. Just a thought.

Thanks! I play mostly pop and jazz, but it's similar to the arpeggio-based etude-like work I've come up with my own lately in order to get to another step beyond work on theory and transposing, which has been my focus for the last couple of years. The most advanced pieces I've learned exactly as written have been Billy Joel's "She's Always a Woman" and "Nocturne", both of which I play in all twelve keys (along with a bunch of other easier songs).
The other piece I'm looking at now is Poulenc's Improvisation No. 7. It's definitely in my difficulty range, but I've just started on it.

I think that's a good estimate. We often see it played/attempted by people before that.
And remember, we have people saying the Winter Wind etude isn't that hard, and the 4th Ballade is "easy."
Mark - Guess it depends on one's definition of "late-intermediate." And of course, student pianists tend to "attempt" pieces that are beyond their means all the time. Playing those pieces correctly and up to speed is another matter entirely!! Heck - I've been working on the Butterfly Etude off and on for the past 50 years. It was finally starting to sound pretty good last week.....
isn't this the etude they call the Aolian harp or something? either way it's definitely one of the easier etudes, but some of the stretches got on my nerves and i only learnt half of it so my opinion doesn't really hold much weight!

Yup - Its relatively easy if you're good at "leaping" and "stretching" while still playing evenly and making everything sound smooth as silk.
It's the Aeolean Harp Etude, Op. 25 No. 1 in A-flat---- a beautiful piece and difficult for voicing. If you master this wonderful composition your voicing technique will improve beyond measure. Also careful phrasing.
