Hi,

Please can someone advise on the following:-

The ABRSM provide guidance for minimum speeds for scales, which I find confusing. It's shown as metronome markings (in brackets) by grade (see below).

Quarter note (Crotchet) =
Grade 1 (60), Grade 2 (66), Grade 3 (80)

Half note (minim) =
Grade 4 (52), Grade 5 (63), Grade 6 (76) Grade 7 (80) Grade 8 (88)

What does this mean though in terms of "notes per minute" (since it seems dependant on how the scales are notated).

I like Cooke's "Mastering scales and Arpeggios" and it gives practice speeds based on notes per minute (that I can understand) and shows the speed varying from 60 up to a max of 208 notes per minute.

What would the ABRSM metronome settings guidance be in terms of notes per minute?

TIA

2 notes per beat Grades 1-3. 4 notes per beat Grade 4-8.

ABRSM also publishes scale books, which you might find additionally useful.

Mostly we refer to tempo rather than speed. I believe this is fairly universal in most languages. Just for your info. I sometimes catch myself using speed and I should know better! [Linked Image]

So the standard is eighth notes at quarter = 60 for Grade 1, but sixteenth notes at half = 52 for Grade 4?

That's confusing. Why not just use the quarter note as the reference and say quarter = 104 for Grade 4? (I'm still not sure if you'd play eights or sixteenths.)

I'm still confused (but working to Elissa's advice)!

In the ABRSM "Manual of Scales and Arpeggios" that I have, all scales and arpeggios are notated in sixtenth notes (semiquavers) as in Cooke.

Perhaps the ABRSM notation for grade level exam scales is not in sixtenth (semiquavers) notes for Grades 1-3? The ABRSM piano syllabus pdf shows broken chords as eigth notes (quavers), perhaps its the same for scales at these levels?

Having the information smeared over three or more documents isn't helping matters...

All the scales would be notated in quavers (eighth notes) and that's why there are 4 notes to a minim beat from Grade 4 onward.

I don't have a book in front of me but you can be assured that this is correct.

Elissa,

Thanks for the further clarification....
