Ernst Krenek, 5 pieces for trombone and piano, Op. 198 (1968)

This is the first of the five pieces. I performed this with an amazingly talented trombonist last month, and I'm glad I was asked to accompany him. This was particularly interesting because of all the extended techniques required for both instruments. Piano: pounding and plucking strings, striking any wooden part of the piano, silently depressing keys, quick loud notes immediately followed by depressing same notes quietly, etc. Trombone: using spatula to play percussively in bell, quick removal of slide to produce loud popping sound, muttering and screaming into mouthpiece, etc.

While the first piece doesn't include all the techniques, it's a good representation of the flavor of the entire suite. I'll post the other pieces later.

As a trumpet player who 'tinkered' on trombone when my friends would let me play theirs, I can say that this sounds like a lot of fun! Especially the screaming into the mouthpiece! laugh

I haven't listened to it yet...I'm busy downloading someone's 45Mb sonata...but when I'm done, I'll try to get to this.

Every day we are afforded a new chance. The problem with life is not that you run out of chances. In the end, what you run out of are days.
