Yamaha's are very loud. You can try positioning the back close against a wall. Placing a dense rug under the piano can also help.

Dear KlinkKlonk, I do not remember the book and its author. The bottom line is that one of the hero of this book just did not have sound grand. When he was visited by a friend, he shared his troubles with him. A friend advised to remove all carpets of the living room. Perhaps, you need buy and hang carpets on the walls ?maxim_tuner_bodger

I saw a Yamaha player grand the other week with soundproofing padding stuffed everywhere underneath the piano where player parts weren't, obviously to quiet the piano. Stuff the spaces between the back posts with padding. Or.....see if the hammers can be voiced softer, if not, replace the hammers.

A live room will make a piano sound louder and brighter. To change a live room to a dead room, make sure you have curtains, not blinds on the windows, carpet on the floor, not wood or tile. Cloth chairs, not vinyl or leather.

I spent a couple of hours at a clients house a month or so ago deep needling the heck out of the shoulders of a 15 year old Yamaha C3 that was VERY loud for the space. My arm was very sore at the end. I had to needle it way down, reshape the hammers, pound them in, polish them some more with very fine sandpaper, hammer on them some more, etc.

By the end it was a transformation - a much mellower sound that still had adequate articulation.

In my opinion any of the soundproofing options tend to deaden the tone.

Try to find a technician in your area who is experienced with deep needle voicing. Go with the best tech you can find and be willing to pay top dollar for his/her services.

Thanks for your replies, rysowers how much would you estimate it would cost? Yamaha have some good techs that works for them. I assume I won't know until they had a listen..
