For those of you who have played pieces by Glass, are there any that a beginner (7 months of experience) could attempt?

Hmm.... that's a good question. The easiest piece of his--that I know of--is "Metamorphosis I." The trickiest part of that one is having to twist yourself up in a pretzel to play those low bass octaves with the right hand. And getting the dynamics right is crucial. But the notes themselves are not bad, and it's a straight eighth note rhythm, which is a welcome change of pace from all those polyrhythms he is so fond of. help

p.s. Before you buy any of his sheet music, look for the big Philip Glass collection. I think amazon carries it. It has most of his piano solo pieces in one bundle, and it's a lot cheaper than buying the smaller collections individually. [so says Monica, who was much peeved to discover this AFTER buying the smaller collections separately. bah ]

Oh, I did see that recording. It is very nice!! If metamorphosis I is the easiest piece, it is for certain far too difficult for me now. Maybe in a few years smile Thanks!

Don't hate me for asking this, but why would you want to play anything by Philip Glass in the first place?

@time-lord - why would anybody want to play music by any composer? it's not rocket science. or perhaps we should all decide what we want to play based on your personal preferences...?

Oh, maybe because of something like this:

This is my aspiration Philip Glass piece. I bought the sheet music, but it's a ball-breaker bit tough for me right now. This is the piano solo transcription of the Satyagraha evening song. I like it as a piano solo even better than the opera. I just love those deep bass notes toward the end.

Welcome to the forum, time-lord. smile Isn't it great that there's so many different types of music and something for everybody to enjoy?

I really enjoy classical music right now. My wife tells me, "I really like that piece you've been playing lately".

This one? [play a few bars of a classical piece] - not that one
This one? [play a few bars of a different classical piece] - no
This one? [play a few bars of a romantic piece] - no

"All that stuff sounds the same. That *other* one you've been playing"

Oh, *this* one? [plays a few bars]

"Yeah, that's it! I like that one"
