Baroque ornaments would never have been written out and would have been left to the taste of the player. More or less notes are perfectly acceptable. To many of us, less is more - meaning that a well executed ornament is going to sound far better than trying to cram all the possible variations in and crashing.

If you find it difficult sleeping you could consult CPE Bach's extensive essay on ornamentation.

Alternatively, try this: Baroque Ornamentation

  • Debussy - Le Petit Nègre, L. 114
  • Haydn - Sonata in Gm, Hob. XVI/44

I didn't listen to the recordings since I don't know this piece. But it's basically a trill followed by a mordent. So you can extend the trill part as you like.

thanks guys.

it seems I cant find it in the page Andy pointed out though..

WOuter: you say trill +mordent. But it seems to me there is something BEFORE the trill as well

it should be something like "trill with prefix from below AND termination"

The part I can see of the figuration is just trill plus mordent.

There seems something attached to it to the left but it falls out of the picture. Might be the one note to be prefixed. And you can always extend the figuration if you like smile

Yes that new picture shows an arc, adding the extra figure before the trill.
