I have not been on the forum (or the computer for that matter) all that much lately so I may have missed someone else asking this but is anyone else getting the embedded ads in the general threads? What I'm talking about is, certain words in the threads being turned into links to ads. Like if I say the word "job" and then it gets turned into a link to some "Get a new career" ad.

Just curious.

That's usually a sign of some sort of malware rubbish on your computer. See if it happens in a different browser? I'd be running a virus scan anyway.

Dang... I have a mac and have never had that kind of problem before. I don't even have a virus scan program.

That was happening to one of my clients and it was an "add-on" program that got loaded in - to a brand new computer! You can google the problem and find lots of info and which add-ons are doing it, and how to turn them off for your browser. It turned out to be a simple fix, but it was disconcerting. Theirs didn't even link to anything relevant to the word they were (mis)using. We had the guy doing the installation of the new computer come back and turn it off, but he showed me where to find them on my browser. I don't know about it on a Mac, but I'd bet the google search would do it.

Or maybe your friendly genius store, or whatever they call it? Starbucks? Something smile

Nope, contextual advertising/in-text adverts are not enabled on this forum.

Which browser do you use as chrome and IE have add-on(s) which do this =/ such as "Text Enhance" and a few others.

I'm using safari. But I just checked and it's happening in all my browsers.

I'm running a scanner (presently paused) at this very time. A few weeks ago I was researching countertop dishwashers since I was seriously wondering whether they were a good idea. Ever since, dishwashers pop up everywhere. AND the computer has been getting slower and slower. I use Chrome and suspect it's part of the problem.

Since you use safari look for anything related to Vibrant Media "in-text ads" or "Enhanced Text" in your plugins/addons/extensions I usually use malwarebytes for cleaning up junk like this.

For chrome this can be done by going to "Chrome://addons" or "chrome://extensions" I believe.

There is also "Chrome://plugins" and "Chrome://flags" for those a little more tech savvy.

Many thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Well, after much searching it turns out it's some stupid program called "dropdowncoupon". How it got into my computer is anyone's guess. I had to go into preferences in all my browsers to get rid of it.

Personally I would probably run a scan with an antivirus, both Sophos and Avast do free editions for Mac, or look for some antispyware software, as otherwise I suspect it will reappear

Remember that Macs are not immune to viruses they are just rarer!

Yea, Peyton!

How *anyone* could possibly think a program like that would do the program's *owners* any good is beyond me :\
