This week I will have my first piano lesson after more than thirty years. My new teacher asked me to bring some books.
I will bring Burgmuller Opus 100 and classics to moderns part 3.
And a book with chords and scales.
We will start with every week 30 minutes.

The last months I played everything together, then this then that. It is also good for me to have more structure.

I 'm not used to someone listens when I play. The first lesson , therefore, feels like an audition.

Peter, it will feel weird. And nerve-wracking. And exciting. And hopefully stimulating. Let us know!

Surprisingly easy, barely an inconvenience.

It is very exciting to be starting lessons after so long without them. Hopefully, as you get more comfortable with your teacher, playing will seem less like a performance. And it may take time getting used to someone else being in control of the direction your repertoire takes. But, the pros of taking lessons far outweigh any negatives. Best of luck to you. Hope you write about your experiences.

Peter, I went back to lessons at 65 after 45 years almost 4 years ago. Yes at first I was both excited and nervous. I got very little sleep the night before my first lesson. I am so glad that I did start taking lessons again. It took some time before I was comfortable playing in front of my teacher but it gets better with time. It was not anything he did. It was all me. I hope you have a wonderful experience. I look forward to my lessons all week. Let us know how it goes.

It is scary returning to lessons after a long break, but it is well worth it. I remember my first lesson back as an adult after a 40 year break. My leg was shaking so much I could barely control the pedal! All went well though, and l quickly learned to look forward to each week's lesson.

Welcome back to the world of the piano student, and let us know how everything goes!

My story: Went back at age 58 after a 25 year lapse. After 14 months, I agree with everything said here.

Thanks for all the nice comments!

I was hoping to start this week. But the piano teacher does not teach this week, in the Netherlands it is autumn-holiday. Next wednesday is the first lesson.
Then I will let you know how it went.

Welcome back and have fun!

It -is- an audition and don't be too hard on yourself if you feel you've completely screwed it up. Your teacher's going to be watching you to figure out what areas you need improvement. If there are no areas, then why would you be paying a teacher anyway?

The piano lesson was a disaster. After ten minutes I left.
The lady teaches in her living room, a very dark cave with a lot of smoke.
I thought for a moment: now we walk to the music studio where the grand is.

No, under an old curtain stood a white painted Yamaha piano.
I had brought a book: "Easy piano pieces on Persian folk songs".
Really super simple.
Well ..... that was a problem ........ :"Then I have to buy that book and study" She only teaches pieces that she already knows.

I told that I have trouble to play chord evenly.
Well, she knew an exercise for that.

I had to place my fingers on five white keys push, and continue to push as hard as possible. And then lift a finger one by one while continue to push as hard as possible with the other fingers
I should do this exercise very often, because it would solve my problem.

I thanked for the advice and I left.

Don't give up on your plan to take lessons. Keep looking for a teacher until you find the "right fit". It may take a while, but it will be worth it.

Take heart, Peter, you just need to search around for a teacher who is right for you. I'm sure you will find one.

Personally, I am restarting lessons tomorrow after a hiatus of several years occasioned by a health crisis. I am looking forward to seeing my teacher again and showing him some cool stuff I have invented since the last time I saw him. Also, I used to record him with a pocket recorder when he played, and he recorded my playing too, but in the interim the world has changed a bit, so now I am thinking I will use my smart phone and take a video or two as he plays (assuming he has no objection). I am at the 3/4 century marker, and I am finding that learning is more fun than ever, and music is the thing I most love to learn.

Peter,
I'm sorry your first lesson back was a disaster. Please don't give up. There are many wonderful teachers out there. I was fortunate to find one who was a good fit the first time but that does not always happen.
Good luck,
Judy

Today I had unexpectedly a lesson with another piano teacher. She was very professional. She studied at the conservatorium majoring in piano. Now I'm happy!
For now, I have a lesson every week.
