Hi all

Ever since hearing Glenn Gould play this (1981 recording), I've been mesmerised by this piece and longed to play some of it. So far I've gotten past the Aria, Variation 1 & 7. Starting out on 2. The fingering seems to be kind of funny with the hanging notes.

Anyone else out there attempting to play these, share your experiences...

I play the Aria and variation #1 as sort of my warm up and "set the tone" pieces in the morning to start my practice. At one point I think I got almost through #3 but I have forgotten them. At the time I had a teacher and it was a good thing too...the trills etc. are not at all what I am used to. The fingering is crucial too. I ended up getting another edition with most of the fingering written in which was a big help.

I think the aria is incredibly beautiful!

gorgeous and surprisingly difficult. i absolutely adore them.. i think it my favorite piece of all time (all of them together). some of them seem impossible... and some of them are pretty easy-ish.

the first variation is so happy and full of joy.

i play the aria publicly, occasionally, and get so many positive comments - everyone seems to love it when they hear it.

the '81 recording is VERY fast.. i like the '55 for Gould.

it's a very long (total playing time: 45 min to 1 hour at least) and difficult piece, and i even saw a teacher screwed up playing it during her recital.

I love them, but find most of them difficult for me at this stage in my playing. I think that in order for me to be able to play the Goldberg variations, it might be advisable for me to study all the Inventions, and then when I develop more skill in playing contrapuntal music I might be able to delve into the Goldberg Variations.
Does this sound like a a good course of action? Gaby Tu

Hi Apple, I believe its the 81 recording which is slower, the 55 recording is scary. The Aria is beautiful, out of this world.

Peyton, yes a teacher can help a lot. I've just found an excellent teacher, who's given lots of pointers. Back to the keyboard and lots of practice...that's why I have to re-work the Moonlight first movement, my water is too choppy if you know what I mean.

One tip he suggested, even for the right hand, play it with 2 hands so that you can identify the melody and which notes need emphasis. thumb
