When playing old favorites, love songs, romantic music, and such is there any reason to play chords higher than 9ths to sound good? I play popular type music only.

The short answer is NO.

Almost anything sounds good as long as it is musical and played confidently and with a strong sense of rhythm.

If you like it and your playing brings that out, others will like it, also.

You will be fine.

Not usually, but occasionally you'll see a 13th or 11th., and certainly plenty of + or -5's.

Worry about that when it happens. A 13th is just a 6th but uses different harmony than the bass triad. Take the extra time to figure out the harmony you want to use as you come across the more obscure chords. Ellington liked the big chords and you'll see lots of 13ths, otherwise they are fairly infrequent.

No wrong harmonies. Just the wrong taste. It's important to develop it!

The correct term: harmony , unsuitable to the spirit of music.
