I finally finished my orchestration of Bartók's 'With drums and pipes' (from 'Out of Doors' for piano solo).

I took a look at Bartók's own unpublished sketch for an orchestration in the Bartók Archives in Budapest. He abandoned his sketch after 31 bars, and after bar 22 only some instruments are scored.

The wind ensemble needed is:
1 flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in A, 2 bassoons, 1 contrabassoon,
2 French horns (F), 2 trumpets in B flat, 2 trombones, 1 tuba
2 timpani and bass drum.

I used Finale Notepad for this audio version, which allows only 8 instruments, so the tutti don't sound what they should sound like, let alone as it should sound live.

.. it seems to me that the inherent nature [of the piano tone] becomes really expressive only by means of the present tendency to use the piano as a percussion instrument - Béla Bartók, early 1927.
