1st movement

2nd movement

Here is my performance of Carl Vine's piano sonata no.1.
It is a part of my final exam, I was nervous... But I think I did pretty good smile

Hope you like it.

Nice job on this piece! What kind of an exam was this, that there was applause afterwards? All my exams just have a stone-faced jury that expects me to leave after I'm done.

How did you find this piece was to learn? It's something I'd love to learn one day, but I think it's way out of my league for now frown

My guess is that it was the final recital for a concert pianist diploma or something similar.

Marked to listen later on! smile

Well -- bravo, Champy! I think you REALLY understand this music very well. This is one of the very few "really" contemporary pieces that have "made it" into the Classical solo piano repertoire (along with Lowell Liebermann's Gargoyles), and it's easy to see why: it's lyrical, brilliantly written for the piano throughout, and exciting. And fortunately, you have enough of the jazz sensibility (as I believe Vine does as well) to maintain a high level of clarity in the complex harmonies and the rhythmic flow without "pounding". Just very convincing, and thanks for sharing this!

I've never heard this piece before, and it (and your playing) kept me engaged the entire time! It really is a lyrical and exciting piece like Tim said, and I think you performed it brilliantly. Kudos!

The piece is starting to be better known. It's gained a place in the competition circuit and is starting to show up in more graduate recitals. A few concertizing pianists also have it in their repertoire (Spencer Myer, Conrad Tao, and Joel Hastings.)

"If we continually try to force a child to do what he is afraid to do, he will become more timid, and will use his brains and energy, not to explore the unknown, but to find ways to avoid the pressures we put on him." (John Holt)
