Hi,

When I have to use a digital stage piano - something portable by one man - I hate the feeling of 'sitting at an ironing board'. No substance to the piano, weedy-looking stands (X or Z stand). I love the feel of sitting at a big lump of wooden furniture.

I've seen some acts pin/stick a banner or printed sheet around the piano's back and legs to give it more stage presence.

Am wondering whether I could make a balsawoood surround to give the piano a chunkier look.

Does anyone else ever feel like this and have you found a solution, apart from pray that the next venue will have a real acoustic piano in good shape...

:-)

If you like a lump of furniture and are willing to move it: aquire an old upright piano, for your purposes look at the "Free" listings on craigslist. A full upright is more imposing, a console is more pragmatic. Remove and throw away the insides. Install your keyboard where the old keyboard used to be. Put some big wheels on it to make it more portable.

No, I've never done this; but I've seen it done. It's referred to as a "shell" if you want to google the practice...

Use hardboard. Its light and very tough on one side and you can hinge it for folding and transporting. Doesn`t have to be perfect.
