sorry for the immature subject title, but let me get to the part where I tell you my problem. Alright i have a Casio Privia PX-130 I hooked it USB from my laptop to the PIANO first day it was ok after reconnecting it a million times. I start PianoMarvel go to set up and PianoMarvel can read my piano.

I can actually set it up and play my Piano had alot of fun too made it all the way to the c SONG. Second day I want to have fun again so I hook my piano to this laptop start the c song lesson scored a ZERO, reason is because pianomarvel is not reading the piano. I CAN SELECT "CASIO MIDI" but it does not work

ok so I hook the piano to my brand new desktop 64 bits WINDOW 7, and guess what? PianoMarvel does not even read the piano at all. Cannot even find it in setup even after many times of replugging. But funny thing is I look under the hardware section to see what device are connected to the computer and it shows right there under unspecific "CASIO MIDI AUDIO" or something like that

I'm so frustrated, Will my problem be solve if I BUY A MIDI controller? Or do you recommend me getting a new keyboard I honestly don't mind. God... I just want to learn to play the piano by the way the laptop is using Windows 7 32 bits.

you might be right, so can you suggest a program that helps beginners on learning to play the piano?

Manchild, (these names grin ), I personally know of no one who has learned the piano from a software program, no one.

You'll learn much faster with a qualified teacher standing next to you.

Seconded.

Playing the piano is much more technical than skiing or snowboarding or playing the guitar or drums. Lessons with a qualified teacher will ensure that you don't adopt bad techniques that may become insurmountable when they have become ingrained.

Thirded lol

I am always very curiouse to see these programs but I doubt they can teach you how to move more fluently or to understand the structure of the song ex: phrases, cadences etc.

I would just call the software customer service. I doubt that it has to do with the 64 or 32 bit. Could there be a software update that you need for the piano?

I agree with Dr Popper and Dave Horne.

You could install one of the many free midi event viewers and check that midi events can be processed in your PC. That would confirm the piano marvel software is at fault. If the midi events cannot be seen then there's a driver or configuration problem.

There is a thread here called the Adult Beginners Forum, and you can get lots of advice there on learning with or without a teacher.

Many people over there without a teacher use a book with CD from 'Alfreds' but I can't vouch for how good or bad it is.

I'm currently using one of the Alfred books myself and I feel like it's working out well. My plan is still to take lessons once I get to a certain level though. I don't think you could ever replace a teacher being able to observe you and make corrections with a book.

Good for you for taking the initiative, Lefty; I would still recommend that you check in with a teacher once in a while, in order to ensure that your technique develops appropriately.
Good luck

No. All pianosand MIDI controllers use the exact same MIDI protocol.

The problem almost certainly is with your software.

All Apple Macs come with such software installed. It uses videos of a teacher, animation and grades you as you play along. More advanced lessons use well known pop recording artists as instructors. It is very well produced

That said, it is not better than using a printed book. What matters the most is how you practice and if you have a real teacher. Software seem like a good idea and it works but it works no better then a book.

I would actually suggest the reverse: learn the basics from a good teacher then if you want to venture off on your own, do so. I would still check in with a teacher from time to time, but I think it's best to start with a teacher and move to learning alone vs the other way around.

Good luck with whatever you do - playing the piano is fun.

My original intent for learning piano was to learn music theory. I play guitar and I have some basic theory, but I'm finding it difficult mostly because I'd need to memorize the fret board and the notes aren't really linear. Well they are, but you're not going to play a scale on a single string. Also you can play scales and only know the root note. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's easy to play guitar and not know all the notes. It's also not visually obvious which notes are which. I thought learning to play the piano would really force me to learn more theory and the notes are obvious.

So that's the process I've started recently, but I'm starting to wonder if I may like piano more than guitar. It seems a lot easer to start playing then guitar was and I'm seeing more creative possibilities. Anyway I may be better off getting a teacher now, but I need to buy something better than what I've been using and I want to make sure it's something that I want to stick with. I know that once I end up getting a teacher that he/she may have to correct a lot of things that I didn't know I was doing wrong.

It's been fun for now though. Even week to week I'm noticing things that I thought were difficult are not things I don't even think about.

So did the original poster ever resolve his problem with having his midi app see any midi from his keyboard?

In general, most keyboards like the Privia with a USB midi interface need a driver installed (at least on windows - no idea about the mac).
Then, the program needs to be configured to USE that keyboard for midi in (reading keys) and midi out (writing midi to render audio).

If you'ld like, I can help you out via email? stephen.hazel@gmail.com

ah rats. so it should work with his win7 32 bit laptop, but not with his win7 64 bit desktop then... that sucks.

I'm surprised Casio is so behind the ball. That's pretty lame.

From reading reviews and comments on other forums, the Privia's work fine with 64-bit Windows 7.
