Hi

Over the weekend i played the Roland FP 4F Super Natural Piano, to say the least i was knocked back by the piano samples. The FP 4F has an really authentic piano sound with a nice deep end, like that of a high end plugin.

I recently purchased Yamaha's P-155B Digital Stage Piano which sounds great with it's 4 levels of DSS. But after making the comparison between these two DPs I'm not sure now which has the greater piano sound ?

From what piano do Roland get their samples from to produce this sound ?

Can anyone comment on this assuming you own or have sampled either of the two models ?

You've already stated that you think the P155 sounds great, so why worry about the Roland? The Roland is also much more expensive.

Steinway, as far as anyone knows. Yamaha samples their own pianos and produces DPs with a brighter sound than Roland.

Roland claims on their web site that the sound is a composite from several different european and american pianos. Also remember that the Supernatural is not 100% sample based. It is a hybrid of smiles and modeling. You can see this is a pure sampled piano because it lacks "levels". My goes is that it is in fact sample based but the samples are not stored in a simple time do mane form. I think Roland has extracted a higher level of parameters from the recorded samples and uses these parameters to drive a model.

I have the P155. I still like it, however it has only one good sound. For practice this is enough but if you want to make recordings it is good if you can match the sound of the piano to the music. (Scot Joplin and Mozart might require different piano sounds.)

The P155 can be improved if you plug it into an amp and outboard speakers
