Michael Szécsényi just posted this movie about his restoration of a vintage Grotrian Steinweg. Shows just what's involved with bringing a piano back to life.

The strike points in the bass and tenor seem unusually low. I'd be interested to hear the reason if you know what it is.

I don't think the strike line is low. It may look like it because there is so much of the string above the hammers. The strings are very long on this tall instrument and the strike line is probably right in the ballpark of 1/8 speaking length, judging from the image of the strung plate. In any case, those old guys knew a thing or two about building good sounding instruments!
