Two musical elegies to the fallen in Newtown - 01/29/13 01:29 AM

Seymour Bernstein plays Kreisleriana no. 6 as his lament and tribute.. And I chose the slow movement of a Haydn sonata.

Beautiful, and well chosen!
Seymour's playing seems perhaps even more reflective than that movement might ordinarily have been, or maybe it just seems that way to me because of the indicated inspiration.

You did well to choose this Haydn movement. I regard it as very under-recognized for what it is -- a most remarkable utterance, a concise bombshell of tragedy that we find placed between two playful movements, something we'd never expect by looking at the first page of the sonata. I remember my surprise over it when I first studied the piece. (It was my first Haydn sonata.)
