Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE!

Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 11/30/05 09:55 AM

I am working on getting a group together from PW to attend a concert performance by Indrek Laul of Estonia Pianos on Feb 11, 8pm at Babson College. He is performing on a new Art Case Estonia that will be shipped in just after it is presented at NAMM.

The orchestra that Indrek is playing with consists of very talented amateurs, much like many of the folks here on PW!

If you are interested in attending, please pm me so that I can get an idea of how many folks might come. I hope to get group pricing on tickets with enough attendees and we may have a venue for a gathering either before or after the performance so that we can chat with each other and perhaps Indrek.

For details on the concert New Philharmonia\'s website

Thanks!

Count me in for 2 (my sister said she'd fly up from Florida for this).

I have one of Indrek's CDs, and had the pleasure of hearing him play at NAMM last year.
Wonderful!

Best,

What a great opportunity, it's a shame I can't come then.
Are there any West Coasters near LA who could invite Laul?

BTW, we just LOVE our 190 - it sounds as emotional as it did the day we fell in love with it.

I'm following the thread, at this point and am trying to see about putting something together.

We have a load of people coming over tomorrow, 12/10, for my parents 50th anniversary and its been all-consuming.

We are about 5 miles from Babson, maybe. It surprised me to think Estonia and Babson because they are much more of a business school than anything else.

Re: Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 12/10/05 02:17 PM

The New Philharmonia called me yesterday and they are honoring group pricing for us of $20. Sometime next week they will let me know of the ticket code that you will use to buy your seats on their website. I will email all with the code just as soon as I get it.

The agent's remark was priceless. She thought that arranging for tickets thru their website would make the most sense for an internet group like us! \:D

So when exactly is anyone going to tell me more about an art case Estonia?
Posted by: BeeLady

Re: Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 12/10/05 07:32 PM

Pete all I know is what Indrek Laul told me a few weeks ago. He is having a fancy case concert piano made to be shown at NAMM in LA. It will then be loaded onto a truck to be shipped here for the concert with little time to spare!

We are looking forward to seeing and hearing it!

Happy new year! I can make it and would like to invite all, assuming plans in another pre-concert direction aren't too far along. We are 5 miles from Babson.

The Holidays are what they were and it was hard to get this going sooner. Bee, let me know how it sounds to you. I haven't got tickets, or a babysitter yet, so I am ready to comit to one additional. I'm thinking about a BYO wine & cheese kind of thing, as usual. We'll have some stuff on hand. Concert is at 8PM. How does a 5:30-6:00 start sound?

I promise the piano (that other brand \:\) ) will be tuned and ready.

It all sounds wonderful.

I have still got to figure out if this performance or the Sun afternoon one is the one that I can attend. I am not a late night driver. Guess I had better make up my mind soon, huh? Maybe I can get someone to attend with me and join the group. If so, no problem if the ticket block that you purchased is not available...I could get something separate and join the group at Chris's for the get together.

Re: Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 01/30/06 12:09 PM

I am very sorry to have to send my regrets. I just realized that my daughter's fiddle fesitval is on the same day. She's been working up the tunes for a couple of months, but I only recently became aware of the scheduling conflict. I was contemplating trying to make both events, but it generally runs into late afternoon and is north of us (near Augusta), so I'd miss John's gathering and be rushing like crazy. \:\(

Re: Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 02/01/06 05:39 PM

Things have a been a bit crazy here and at New Phil. They were having a problem with their website ticketing and I have been waiting for their ok and a discount code before letting everyone know how to buy tickets. I have tomorrow as my absolute deadline, if they haven't cleared it up. Either you will be able to buy online or call. They have set aside a block of tickets just for PW members. You will receive an email and/or pm from me tomorrow with instructions.

Guess waiting wasn't such a bad idea, huh Kathy? Sorry to miss you. And I so wanted to go to Zimman's with you \:\( ! Ah, well, next time.

Roberta, you are welcome to come and stay with me as it seems I will now have a vacancy! You could drive here in daylight and ride with us in the evening then go home in the morning. I am about half way to Babson from you. You are more than welcome and would not be the first PW member to stay with us! We have references! \:\)

Ok guys, got the ticketing sorted out. If you are attending the concert on Feb 11, I have sent you an email or pm (or both!) with ticketing instructions.

Anyone who has not RSVP'd to me here or privately who would like to attend, please let me know and I will send you ticketing instructions.

Now on to figuring out how we can get together before the concert. Watch this space! \:\)

Re: Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 02/05/06 08:18 PM

BeeLady and I spoke a few hours ago and we're on for a pre-concert gathering at our house, Saturday.

So, that's 5:30PM. I'll be PM'ing the directions and was thinking of keeping it pretty simple. We'll have light beverages, as well as a little bit of food. Anybody coming, who can bring something extra, is invited to post what they want to bring in this thread. So far, I'm a little light on finger foods, maybe one or two hot things, more crackers, cheese, a little more wine, beer...whatever works.

Looking forward to seeing everyone who can make it. We should be able to quickly shuttle over to Babson as late as 7:45PM. I'm exited over having the opportunity to host. Come join us!

PS - Jeanne, I'm jealous. KathyK and Lilylady, its too bad to see you may not make it \:\(

OK. Directions should have gone out to all. Thanks Bee and Terry for the offerings. They sound great. I just ordered two tickets online, as it looks like my lovely spouse can join us. With a little luck, we'll get her to play, too.

Despite repeated overtures to Indrek about coming over to practice his E flat scales (the 5th Concerto is in, ahem..E flat), I don't believe he is going to make it.

More piano time for the rest of us ;\)

Hmmm, yes. Something to be left to everyone's discretion. Fortunately, this morning's Boston forcast has the snow accumulating a bit latter than yestarday's "...moderate to heavy after midnight". Does anyone want to guess how late the concert will go?

Ax, good idea on the CD's. We may be a little space challenged in the "Piano Room" and I had no play list for the outside.

John and Chris - I just spoke to Andrea (?) the director at New Phil and she said that Babson is reconsidering their decision on the parking ban. So as of now, the concert is still on for tomorrow night (Saturday). They may not decide for sure until after the rehearsal tomorrow morning. I have spoken to the director of the New Phil Orchestra. As of about an hour ago, there were no definite decisions made. The forecast is changing and it seems best to wait until we have more information.

For the time being, please sit tight for a few hours while the details are being worked out.

As soon as I get the official word from the orchestra, I will post here.

Thanks

Re: Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 02/10/06 04:22 PM

Ok, the official word is here. Both concerts for this weekend have been postponed to next week. The only change is that the Sunday performance time will be at 4pm.

Now, if you are unable to make Sat's (Feb 18) performance, New Phil will allow you to swap tickets for Sunday (Feb 19). To do this, please email them at info@NewPhil.org in order to be certain there is space etc. Please do not call, as they have their hands full as it is.

If you are unable to make it next week, please let me know. As there is no refund policy, it is my hope to match up orphan tickets with members who may now be able to attend (Kathyk, Roberta, Bernard?)with this new date.

That being said, if you now are able and desire to join us, please pm me and I will try to hook you up with someone who has extra tickets. I will do my best to find good homes for unused tickets. \:\)

I think that covers it. Any questions, pm me.

Chris, I do hope that we can transfer all the party plans as well? Would it be ok if Indrek comes? \:D

Me thinks Babson may have over reacted...
Forecast for Boston

Saturday night : Windy with snow developing. Low 26F. Winds NE at 25 to 35 mph. Chance of snow 70%. Snow accumulating 1 to 3 inches. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph late.

Geesh folks, it's winter in New England.

I don't know, Frank. We've had forcasts of "little or no accumulation", and ended up with 17" of snow!

Besides, I'm glad it's been postponed because I couldn't have made it anyway because my car is lousy in the white stuff. On a scale of 1 to 10 it's something like -5 in traction!

Take care,

Is is about the same this morning, but after about midnight is when the heavy stuff falls, still 10-14 inch prediction.

Indrek is playing both Sat and Sun in two different venues.

I wouldn't want to have to move that big beautiful Estonia in that weather!

We might get a chance to meet. \:\) They're calling for clear and cold so far for Saturday.

Another wonderful evening with wonderful people. Thanks to Chris and Helen for being such gracious hosts. Helen out did herself with the table spread! We have a new high standard to live up to! It was all so delicious.

Larry's photos are great, I can add just a few blurrier ones.. :p

We were thrilled to have Indrek join us at the party and give us a preconcert overview of the Beethoven he was to play later. Taking in his every word and note...John Citron, Helen's Mom, LeeBea, Helen, John Totaro, John's companion Nina.

The group...

palley, John Citron, ChrisW1's wife Helen, ChrisW1, Indrek Laul, Frank Baxter, BeeLady, JeanneW and LloydW. Down in front, Axtremus and Leebea. Larry Buck was so busy taking a photo, he forgot to get into one!

Indrek performing on the big beauty..

At intermission, the audience was invited to come up and view the piano before the movers took it away to the next venue. I think EVERYONE came up to take a look!

Re: Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 02/19/06 12:48 PM

Yes, it was a great evening!

Chris has a beautiful home, a beautiful family, and a beautiful piano... geesh, some people have it all :-)

Seriously, many thanks to Chris and his family for hosting the pre-concert gathering. The food was wonderful and everyone enjoyed themselves completely. And thanks to John Totaro of Boston Piano and Organ for organizing the event (John, we will take you up on your offer to borrow your hall sometime soon).

Indrek's "lessons" before the concert were a treat, and the concert itself was a joy.

As beautiful as the new Estonia was from the outside, we were all waiting in anticipation to see the inside, and we weren't dissappointed.

Indrek's interpretation of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 was fantastic. It's hard to tell who enjoyed themselves more, the orchestra, Indrek, or the audience (I think it was a 3 way tie).

Speaking of the orchestra, they are The New Philharmonia Orchestra ( www.newphil.org )under the direction of Ronald Knudsen. Their music includes classics, family, pops, and chamber.

These are people who play music because they love it, and you can see it on their faces. Check them out if you have a chance.

Thanks again to everyone involved. It's always fun to get together with our forums members.
I never met a forums gathering I didn't like :-)

Now, a few more pictures...

It was great to see everyone again and chat. Events like this remind me of why I am here. Very nice.

Thanks to everyone who came. We had a wonderful time opening up our home to such gracious guests. We got a chance to hear and meet Indrek Laul, and we also met our new neighbor, John Totaro. Sorry, to those stranded by the door bell.

I hope we appropriately saluted our special guest. Indrek really brought in the kind of soiree atmosphere that I believe everyone found both captivating and intimate. And, wow, it happened in our home, and on our very own piano!

Thanks to all who provided food and drink, my wife included. I was out of town until the AM on Saturday and she pulled out the stops. Your thoughtfulness led to quite a spread and, um, lunch for the rest of February ;\)

The pictures look great. I got to show them to my folks before they left.

Wow! what a trip! We just got home to Binghamton (really Vestal!) after an exciting weekend.

Many thanks to Chris and Helen for being such gracious hosts. And to BeeLady for her efforts at organizing the affair.

And, of course, to Frank for providing such a place for us to hang out.

This concert was great and it was a thrill to meet Indrek. He was kind enough to autograph our copy of his CD.

Today I had the great pleasure to meet my good PW friend Paul Y at his place of business. Was nice to try a variety of pianos such as we don't find here in the boondocks. (And to conclude that my Clavinova is still very suited to my needs.)

Thanks to ChrisW1 and family. Chris W1 and family threw a great party! (I hope you're happy now -- 'coz it looks like you'll making all future piano parties look bad. ;\) \:D )

Thanks to Dr. Laul for giving the PW crowd a pre-concert lecture at Chris W1's, and to John Totaro of Boston Organ and Piano for sponsoring the excuse for us to have a party.

Special thanks to BeeLady, not only for organizing the event, but also for giving me a ride to the party and concert -- much appreciated! \:\)

For all of you who could not make it to the event, well, I am sorry you couldn't make it. Please scroll up, look at the pictures again, and make it your President's Day resolution to not miss the next party. ;\)

I kind of like the new Estonia name on the fall board. I wonder if that will adorn all new and future Estonias.

Although I was unable to join everyone, I took such delight in viewing all the pictures and reading the gratifying responses of those who were in attendance.

Thanks for posting pictures and providing reviews to what was definitely a memorable gathering.

I do have to admit though, I am a bit concerned about the piano pile-up pic taking place behind a table of lucious food vs a lucious piano!!!

So, what is on our local itinerary for a March gathering??? Hmmm..... !!!! Stay tuned for further info... ;\)

In the meantime, please mark your calendar for the first spring concert, sponsored by the Frederick's.

I have put it in my book so I am interested. I also am interested in the PTG on Sunday if you are coordinating that too. Do I fill out the application and send the check to Larry for that one?

Re: Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 02/21/06 06:37 PM

A CD of the Berlin Philharmonic on my Wave music system playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto #5 doesn't hold a candle to my experience of being there to hear the New Phil and Indrek play it on Saturday night. I can't think of a music experience I've enjoyed more.

Re: Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 02/21/06 08:57 PM

Hello, Everyone:

This was AWESOME! Lloyd and I had a wonderful time!

Thanks, Chris and Helen, for welcoming us into your home and being such gracious hosts. Your house is beautiful, and "The Red Room" is the perfect setting for your beautiful Steinway!

Thank you, Indrek! (If you happen to read this at some point in time.) We enjoyed meeting you and your wife. One of the highlights of our evening was listening to you play Chris' piano and talk about the Beethovan piece you played in concert later that evening. And the concert was fabulous!

Of course, it was a real treat getting together with familiar PW members again and meeting a few new ones!

We'll have to have another PW get-together soon, though, as others have said, it'll be hard to top this one! I'm actually thinking about having a full scale PW get together at my house in a couple of months. I'm just waiting for my "Social Butterfly Wings" to fully develop!

Chris, I couldn't end this post without telling you I LOVE your piano! It plays well, sounds fantastic, and visually, it's a thing of beauty! As I think Lloyd told you, it is "very musical". At some point here on PW, I was a bit critical of Steinways, saying my opinion is they can lack sustain and be weak in the treble. The treble notes on YOUR piano, Chris, are STRONG and FLOAT above the bass, lingering lovingly above accompaniment. How sublime! \:\)

A Terrific Evening: Good Friends, Good Food, Great Music!

What more could anyone ask?

Jeanne W (and Lloyd, too!)

P.S. I am now the proud owner of THE PianoWorld CD. (Aside to Axtremus: Maybe you shouldn't oughta sell any more PianoWorld CDs from out of the back trunk of your car, Ax. Someone might misunderstand and think you're selling BOOTLEG PIANOWORLD CDs! Ha ha ah ha hah ah a ha ! \:D )

Wow,
What a party! I'm speechless that Dr. Laul was gracious enough to come to the pre-concert party and then avail himself and the new concert grand for all to enjoy.

Special thanks to all who took and posted the pictures. It's time we put one of these shindigs together here in NY. Maybe we can't top this party, but we could sure try!

Regards,
Roger

Re: Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 02/22/06 01:36 PM

I forgot to mention with all the excitement about the party and pictures, that I actually tried the new concert grand!

WOW! is all I can say. \:D \:D

The touch was very even and smooth, like butter yet firm and controlled under the fingers. I really didn't play loud or for very long, but it was sure easy to get used to.

The tone was really beautiful, and surprisingly mellow for an instrument of its size. Yet that didn't bother me because it was such a joy to play on.

So if someone was willing to let me take one of these home, I wouldn't even blink an eye with a second thought!

John,

You mean up on the stage?

How courageous... And what an experience!

Was this after the performance?

I wonder when 'it' will be on the Boston Piano and Organ store. ????

Did Indrek say how many of these will be made in the following year? Or are they only on order?

Re: Boston Area Field Trip! Indrek Laul concert PICS HERE! - 02/22/06 05:06 PM

Roberta,

It was up on the stage, and it was after the performance. An announcement was made that the audience could go up on stage during the intermission to look at the piano just before the piano movers came to move the instrument to its next venue. Well the crowd literally flew up on stage as soon as the first light flickered at the intermission. People were poking around the instrument as though it was beached whale. People were playing keys, but not playing music. With a little nudging from Larry Buck, (well not really necessary...), and I sat down and played some of Chopin's Nocturne No. 1 (op. 9 no. 1 in b-flat minor), and a smidge of some Schubert I could remember off the top of my head.

I'm still floating up there in the heavens way beyond Saturn!

Anyway, no word from Indrek when the instrument will be available for consumption, or if the beauty would be on display in the BPO store.

Helen & Chris, A heartfelt thank you for all of your efforts on our behalf. Your home is beautiful. I especially love the red room...so elegant. And Helen the food that you prepared was delicious. Small world that I live right up the street and have admired your Xmas lights for the past few seasons!

It was a really nice night. Indrek and I loved being able to meet folks from this forum. Indrek mentioned this to me several times during the course of the weekend. Yes, he and I sell pianos but it was not about that. It was about enjoying piano music and meeting folk's who have similar interests. Chris, Indrek remarked to me that your vintage Steinway was a pleasure to play. And I remain impressed that you tuned it yourself.

Frank, This site is great. You can see by my very low post number that I seldom post. However I lurk about regularly as it is how I can learn about what is good and what is bad, etc. Kudos to you on this fine forum and thanks for the cd and mug!

To the rest of the folks who were at the gathering at Chris' and then the New Philharmonia Orchestra's concert, I enjoyed meeting you. My recital hall is yours gratis should you want to again have a gathering. Who knows maybe I could even entice Indrek to join us?

Thanks again for a nice night and for supporting piano music in general.
