post reply -> select forum

post reply -> select forum - 04/19/14 01:56 AM

I try to post a reply, right after logging in and then going back to the page using back button of safari.

When I press the submit button of my post I get

Quote:
You must select a forum in which to jump. Please go back and try again.

Please click [ Back ] to return to the previous page.

I don't understand this message and also not why the submit is not working. I'm already in a forum and I'm trying to post something in a specific thread.

If I click Back I get to the page where I just typed my reply to the topic. I can click Send again, only to get back to this error message.

The fact that you have logged in has just set-up a session for your user on the forum, while it would be nice for it to remember where you were trying to post and redirecting you there after logging in, sometimes this is not the case and you get redirected back to the main index.

Due to this your previous guest session is lost and it doesn't remember where you were, going back on the browser may bring you to the page but likely won't work unless you copy the text for your response before refreshing, pasting, and then clicking submit as this would then re-request the page with your current login.

Basically a session is server sided information stored to authenticate your current login and allows you to come back without re-logging in for the duration set before expiring (logging out terminates said session)

Thanks for the help!

But I'm not quite following you...

I'm not directed to the main index but to the page where I typed my reply.

But I typed in the text after going back? And then I DID click submit but I get the same error again?

So you get redirected to the thread you wish to reply to? as in you can scroll to the bottom to post a quick reply? or are you sent to the full reply screen?

What I meant is that you cannot just click "Back" on the browser to post a reply, unless you go back to it then refresh the page as that page was loaded before you were logged in and not linked to your current "logged in" session.

If however by going back you mean it re-directs you straight back to the "Post Reply" screen automatically without clicking back on the browser, then it should be working.

Yes, sent back to the thread that I wanted to reply to. And if I remember right, my reply was still there.

I mean that was reading a thread that I wanted to reply on. So I clicked on log in, I logged in, and after that clicked back button of the browser to get back to the thread I wanted to reply on. That's much easier than trying to find back the thread from the login screen....

The fact you clicked "Back" to get back to the thread suggests that logging in takes you back to the index and you pressed "Back" on the browser to get back to the thread you wanted to reply to... while this will appear to work and show your reply, that was with the old session before logging in.

You will need to click back as you did, copy the reply, refresh the page of the thread you want to reply to so that your login session is loaded on that thread (due to browsers caching and not re-requesting browser history) and then paste your reply back in and submit, that should work.

Unfortunately unless they modify the forum code to store the page you were at prior to logging in and redirecting to it after successful login, this will remain to be the case, that is... unless you login before navigating to the thread you wish to reply to.

Thanks for that! At least that gives me some workaround.

I would expect that I keep the samme sesssion, and that the only change is that I'm now logged in.

Indeed, I'd happily have a poke around in the code if they ever need it... happy to help smile
