MOYD 2013

MOYD 2013 - 12/29/12 06:02 AM

It's here! It's here! Let the bells ring out, let the banners fly! It's sign up time for MOYD (Master of Your Domain) 2013. Join in - play every day - and see what a great difference it will make to your piano skills!

MOYD is a personal challenge where you commit to playing the piano for some amount of time every single day. It might be a few hours, it might be a few minutes - it doesn't matter. If you miss a day you must come here and say so.

Please report AFTER the fact. We only need to know when you DID miss playing - not that you "might not be able to play".

2013 will be the 9th year of MOYD on ABF.

MOYD RULES

1. Participating in MOYD requires you to sit on the piano bench and play something at least once daily. That's it. There is no minimum amount of time required. Five minutes counts... but more is better. Simply get to the piano every day, let it become a habit, and see what good things happen to your piano skills.

2. If you are away from home (for business, or for personal reasons) , you don't have to practice/play. You go to the 'Excused list".

3. If you are sick, you don't have to practice/play. You go to the 'Excused list".

4. If you are at home, and you are not sick and you miss a day, you have to come here and tell us the sad story of what kept you from playing. Then you go to the "Back on the Wagon list".

5. You may start late - however no new participants are accepted after September 30th.

6. Those who have reported being away, being sick, falling off and getting back on, or who sign up date have the right to put the MOYD 2013 badge in their signatures on 31 December 2013.

HOW TO JOIN

Simply reply to this thread declaring your enthusiastic willingness to join in and be committed to the plan!

I will check in regularly and update this first page with the information you provide. I will not reply to all the posts.

Signature pictures will be offered to those who are 2013 MOYD winners. Below you will find the 2012 Siggies.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADDING IMAGES TO YOUR SIGNATURE:
1. Place your cursor on the desired icon,
2. right click,
3. go to properties,
4. copy the Url,
5. go to your profile page signature box,
6. place cursor,
7. click on "enter an image" paste.
8. save changes

Let us all send a big thank you to MaryBee for making our badges!!

Hi Wisebuff,

here is what you have with the troublesome part higlighted in red at the beginning and end of your text:

[/img]http://www.pianoworld.com/forumpicts/MOYD12/MOYD_12.gif]

what it should be is what I have in GREEN - but after bot of the [ there is a space you need to remove.

[ img]http://www.pianoworld.com/forumpicts/MOYD12/MOYD_12.gif[ /img]

Technically you shouldn't be adding it yet smile (just kidding, I think you're a pretty safe bet smile

My pleasure MaryBee - and I agree, it is fun to see the new badges...(I'm holding off on setting mine up.... I almost fell off the wagon today!! Can you believe it?
I didn't really feel like playing - but I thought..oh c'mon Just DO IT ! I ended up playing for half an hour smile )

Yes! Count me in. I should have signed up for 2012, since I didn't miss a day since I started lessons mid-May. Except for a couple out of town trips, which would have been excused.

Does it still count as a New Years resolution if I WANT to do it?

If you mean you don't know how it will work for you, yes, time will tell.

If you mean you don't understand the instructions found in the first post of this thread, then don't be shy to ask a question. I try to make it as clear as possible, but I know that when you already know how something works you can take it for granted that your instructions are clear smile

Welcome to MOYD.

you need to put [ img] at the front of the string (remove the space before the "i" and then at the end you need to put
[ /img] - remove the space before the " / "

Then it should work!

Thanks for the welcome I have re-looked at the first post it is very clear I usaly have short breaks when playing so this should be interesting.

Somebody once said There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know. smile

Grazie Casi. Felice Anno Nuovo!

Molehill - it's my pleasure, and really, it isn't all that time consuming. These first few days take a little bit but the rest is just a wee bit here and there - it is a nice way to contribute to the community.

Venice Felice Anno Nuova anche a te - I suppose the others will have fun with online translators too!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/01/13 08:22 AM

MOYD saved me today. After a party that went until 3 am last night (way past my bedtime) it would have been easy to forget to practice today. But, with the incentive of MOYD I made it to the bench and had a good practice session!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/01/13 09:58 AM

Happy New Year everyone. First thing I did when I got up (at 4 am) was play the piano. Now we're packed and ready for road trip to Dallas. I'm bringing several books and my little rollup keyboard. The sound is awful but I can work on fingering if I get a chance. We'll be back Monday night and I hope to have no misses to report.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/01/13 11:37 AM

Happy New Year all!
I'm trying again for 2013.
I started out well in 2012 but ran out of steam in the last quarter following a death in the family. I suppose I could have asked for "excused" list but at some point I just quit caring.

Well, life must go on, and music makes me happy. This accountability group has kept me practicing on days I otherwise felt like giving up, I've got a teacher now who challenges me to stretch outside my box. But I still can't seem go get all the way through a piece without mistakes--perhaps my problem is concentration? Or commitment?
Anyway, I'm off to the piano for my first practice of 2013.
Posted by: casinitaly

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/01/13 12:06 PM

SwissMS, we stayed up a bit late last night, and I'm coming down with a cold... but still, yes, MOYD pushes us to the keyboard! I had a good sesion too - very pleased with my progress on my new barocque piece.

Wisebuff - 4am? You must have a digital! - or Silent feature! smile
Or a very patient family! Have a safe trip to Dallas. (I'm half-way tempted to get a roll up of my own for travel days......)

Tararex - I have never made it to the "pure" list - but there are some who do! Why not check out some piano shops in Philly and see about popping over for a visit while you're in town? You may even hook up with some PW folks!

Tinman1943, condolences on your loss. I think suffering a death in the family would either put me right off piano or push me to it to the point of obsession, one or the other. I'm glad to hear that music makes you happy - and if it brings joy to you, then you will be doing it for that pleasure, not for a MOYD sign up. As for Concentration and making mistakes: I don't know how long you've been playing, but I think the concentration issue is a big one especially for those of us who really started as adults.
I do find that my concentration seems to be improving a bit recently - maybe we just need to cover a certain amount of groundwork, laying foundations, before it starts to kick in. I still don't consistently make it through a piece without errors though - it is an on and off thing.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/01/13 08:47 PM

Yay! Thanks, I went and got the 2012 badge.

I was so amazed at how getting a better piano made me want to practice. My old crummy one sounded like a tortured cat. Well, my teacher encouraged me to upgrade and it made a huge difference in my desire to practice. My new-to-me piano would be considered the 'bottom of the line' Kawai but it is still such a massive improvement I can hardly believe it. I'll probably upgrade again in a year or two but wow, I really want to practice now. Just think how much better I'd be if I had ditched that awful thing a long time ago!

I don't see why it would not count. The rules say "play/practice the piano" ...surely you are doing one or both of those during a lesson smile

Have a wonderful time at your first lesson!!!!!!!!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/05/13 07:19 PM

Add my name to the list if you would be so kind. I had quite forgotten about signing up again for MOYD until I saw this thread; practicing everyday has become such a integral part of my routine. MOYD has rubbed off on my sister ,who plays the violin, is also determined to play everyday. That she picked up her violin at 10pm last night and played some of her assigned pieces, so she would not miss a day.

I will be Master of my Domain in 2013. Right now I can only use my right hand, but I just started in learning today. When I get to where two hands are used I will use my right hand to record the left hand part into my PX-350's recorder, then play the right hand part with it on play back until I can use my left hand again. So sign me up. laugh yippie

I'm an adult returning to piano study after decades of zero to sporadic playing. This fall I got a new and I think, wonderful teacher.
I've been trying to decide about MOYD all week and today I can say I'm ready to commit.

It would be great if I could tag along a few other things--exercise, reading, getting outside. Life would be perfect then. Sigh!

Thank you, casinItaly, for managing this.

Hi ginko2 - My pleasure to help out on MOYD.

I know how inspiring a new / good teacher can be. They can really get you fired up!

Welcome to all the folks who are new to MOYD - it is great to see so many new participants along with the "oldies"!

Reporting in: My piano habit is so entrenched that my fingers ache to play if I'm away. We drove to Texas for a dog show and I took my roll up keyboard. It is not a satisfying substitute but it did help me stay connected to the music. Got home last night and the piano was delighted to see me (or is that I was delighted to see the piano). I missed Jan 4.

My first lesson of 2013 was yesterday--I'm hoping to get thru "Charlie Brown Christmas" in time for NEXT Christmas! 10 songs--so one per month.
I've got three versions: "Easy Piano", Really Easy (but lots of page turns), and Not Easy play-along. The not easy will have to wait for another year!

Not sure if this is excused or an off the wagon, but I had to send my bench back last Wed. due to it being defective with a safety issue. I can't just use a chair because I have Ulnar nerve issues and if I am not at the proper position exactly it gives me fits. Musician's Friend says the replacement should ship between Mon-Wen. next week as they have received it.

Now THAT is frustrating!!!

As there is the ulnar issue, then my opinion is that it counts as excused.

Let me know when you are back at the piano and I'll put the dates in.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/13/13 12:55 PM

guess i will sign up again this year. signed up last year but didn't make it. travel etc. however the main reason i fell off the wagon was because i tried taking lessons. it's crazy but when i took the lessons it just made me hate playing the piano. the bad part is i had a really good teacher - guess i'm just afraid of commitment (don't tell my wife). it took me about 4 months before i could even look at the piano again. even now, i can barely bring myself to play the pieces / exercises from the two months of lesson. to repeat: the teacher was great, i just have some weird thing about taking lessons. this have happened several times over the past 5 - 6 years.

so far this year have gotten about 2 hours per day; 3+ on weekends.

You know, when I see questions like this I think...oh, um...heck, I don't know....lol.

So, after giving it a bit of thought, this is what I think:

If I stay up til 12.15 today and then play the piano (with my headphones!)....it would count for playing today. Tomorrow, after my beauty sleep, I would play again.

We're not looking for black and white don't cross the line rules here - we're looking for what makes sense towards keeping us on track.

Cheers

fell off the wagon Saturday; no real good excuses! Actually thought about it when I woke up Sunday morning at 1am to go to the bathroom and seriously contemplated for a minute going downstairs to play something, but thought it would be silly at that point and went back to bed. Anyways, got some good practicing in today and more to come again tomorrow before and maybe following a lesson.

Yes, it does! A baby grand will be delivered at my new address in another three days.
I didn't plan on buying a grand this early (only been back in the game five months, after all), but my grandfather heard me make an offhand comment about how I would like to have a grand piano at some point in my life, and to him that was reason enough to run off to the store and buy one (I'm paying him back, though ... already gave him a 60% down payment).

It's a Boston baby grand (model 156 PE). Will post pictures soon!

You play 2 hours a day but hate lessons?
Doesn't sound like the teacher was so great for you.
It took me a long time to find a teacher that worked for me and with me.
I finally found a place that offered group lessons for adults,
and had a teacher that was more interested in meeting my expectations
than having me meet his/hers.
Once I saw I was making progress, I knew I had found the right one.

So how are we all doing? There have been a few days this month where I could only fit in half hour of playing but on average I'd say I'm doing 2-3 hrs a day, this has probably been made easier to do as I bought my first acoustic this year, just hope I can keep it up.

Here's a question for anyone who might know, does playing on a software keyboard, namely an iPad app count? I'm just thinking ahead for if I'm in a situation where I can't get to a piano but have my ipad with me. I often use it for tinkling out little melodies or for doing theory when I'm not at home so just curious if it counts as part of MOYD.

hmm um... Heck, I don't know.
I do know some folks use roll-up keyboards when away from home.
Is this any different?

My opinion is that if you have no access to a real keyboard, digital or acoustic, and you use the app to work on your piano skills - either playing or practising, in a way that you feel is a legitimate moment of focusing on your piano skills improvmeent, then it qualifies.

The following is not just for Neil, it is for others who have asked or are thinking about various scenarios "what if....."

Lots of folks ask "is it ok, does it count...?" In a way I feel absurd being the "rule maker". What it boils down to is being honest with yourself, and not tricking yourself into thinking you've worked on piano when you haven't.
Does a lesson count? ....well, did you sit down and play - yup.
Does a roll-up count? ....Can you play it? Yes? - ok.
Does an app really mimic playing piano...Well, I've seen Lang Lang use one on stage pretty effectively....I think it counts.

Those are my opinions, and going through the past MOYD threads, the first two seem to be held as ok through general concensus. The third point is something "fairly" new - but as new options open up, let's keep on exploring them!

The point is to work at getting better, right? To be as consistent as possible with getting to the piano!
Play on!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/29/13 02:38 AM

Mind you, this isn't about getting away with as little practice as possible, but rather trying to make it work when unable to take your time at your own piano. Nobody would recommend learning to play on just a roll-up or iPad. You need the real experience. But sometimes, that's all you got.

I've tried a few of these piano apps, but they don't seem to be for me. It's so limited. You can only play one hand, and even that is just one octave or so. I have no music that could be played on the app, leaving just excercise. And you can't even do scales.

Right you are Allard (though I don't think Neil is trying to get away with anything (nor that you are suggesting he is). It is simply making the best of what is available to you.
I don't really know how the apps work.
As I said, it is an honour system here. Above all we have to be honest to ourselves.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/29/13 07:00 PM

Hey guys, thanks for the response. I certainly don't want to be seen as trying to get away with anything. It's my determination to not let a single day pass where I don't do something related to learning piano. I've been lucky so far in that I can access my piano everyday, but I can see this may get harder as our baby due date gets nearer and when baby is born (beginning of June).

I have plenty of apps on my ipad which are music related, but mostly I'm using it for theory, note identification, scale identification, chord practice etc. I can use the software keyboards to play out little melodies of my own, or to put into practice some theory I've just learnt, it really is quite useful, especially when I have time on my hands at work (night shift). I hope it would be ok for this to count toward MOYD if the time comes when I cannot play my piano.

Keep up the good work guys,

Neil.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/29/13 07:20 PM

My teacher mentioned a while ago that if I'm really not near a piano, reading through & analysing a score can be useful too, so maybe some of your apps could qualify.

btw, I'm SO glad I got my digital piano - this is the 3rd day in a row that the only time I had to practice was early in the morning. I might not have found time at all to work on the acoustic, but with the digital I can just plug in the headphones & let 'er rip.

The reason for the early start today was that I had to get to a dentist appointment. My previous dentist, who I'd known for about 40 years, retired a few weeks ago, & guess who took over his practice? Dr. Bach! He did a crown prep today for me today & it turns out he's a really good dentist as well as having an auspicious name.

You're going to have to put me on the sick/injured list. The Ulnar nerve problem has just gotten too bad to continue on. I go in for testing to see where the problem lies Thursday. Here's to hoping it's in the elbow, which is where we think it is, because that's the easiest to treat. They start with time in a sling and if that doesn't stop it go in and just move the nerve over. If it's the neck (least likely in my opinion) they put you in traction. If it's entrapped at the wrist that is surgery with a long rehab and no guarantees.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/30/13 02:20 AM

Neil - no, no, no one meant to think you would try to "get away" with anything, it was just a discussion on the ideas.

I think that using the app for working out fingerings or practicing tricky bars (because I think - I may be wrong) it might be a lot harder to actually play it as a keyboard! smile (Lang Lang we are not!) I would say that although study of theory and studying sheet music is useful, those activities do not count for MOYD. MOYD has to be working your fingers on keys in some fashion. So sounds like part of what you can do is certainly MOYD-worthy Neil smile

Joyoussong-Carol - Hope your dental work goes smoothly. I had a crown done a couple of years ago and it was a totally frustrating experience. I had a very weird dentist. Note the past tense! With a name like Bach, you can't help but feel something is right in the universe eh?

Bill - So sorry to hear your problem is getting worse instead of better! Best wishes for getting it resolved soon, in the simplest way possible!!!!

Do you swim or are you coaching the team or are your kids swimmers? I'm always curious about the names we assign ourselves.

Good for you playing the piano. I started playing (I'd played some in high school) when my eldest son was in lessons. He quit after high school but I'm still at it. He had more talent too...I keep asking him if he's going to play again.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 02/01/13 01:49 AM

WiseBuff - Both my kids swim competitively and I spend a lot of time driving them to and from the pool, sometimes at 5am. I myself also swim, for fitness; so does my husband. Swimming is a great sport, I highly recommend it. And if you don't know how to swim, it's never too late to learn - just like playing the piano. I found swimming can be enjoyable, relaxing and frustrating; also just like learning to play the piano.

I would think your son will go back to play again in the future, and he'll be happy that he learned to play when he was a child.

January is gone, and I have been faithful. In fact I may have over practiced. But that has been a good thing. I have found practice time to be therapeutic; playing takes me away from the daily grind and allows for peace and solitude. I can not be more happy that I have finally started to learn.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 02/02/13 08:53 PM

How much is enough?
If anyone is wondering how much practice is enough,
I'd like to pass on the advice a teacher once gave me:

It's better to play 5 min EVERY day than an hour or two once a week!

Those 5 min will often turn into an hour;
but the day will come when you don't have an hour,
so you skip it. And another time; then two days in a row.
Before you know it, you will have missed a week, a month, a year.

So if there's a piano anywhere around, I at least touch it.
How long does it take to play once thru that piece you're working on?
Or review one you've already learned?
Or if you don't have music, a scale or chord progression your'e practicing?

Now I don't know how the "rule makers" would feel about this, but I've got another idea.
I'm coming to believe in the value of listening.
Have your teacher make you a recording of that piece you're working on,
or try to find a recording on iTunes, YouTube, etc.
And listen to it every day.
(This technique is integral to the famous Suzuki method.)

So I would say, even if you won't be near a piano, put the piece on your phone or music player,
or find it on YouTube, and at least listen to it. That will help you learn to play it.

TinMan,I fully agree with the idea that 5 minutes a day, every day is better than days with gaps! Plus the truth is that even if you say "well, I will get in at least 5 minutes" that REALLY does lead to more playing. I think that in 3 years, there have only been a handful of days where I really only did play for about 5 minutes - and they were generally days where I was either departing for a trip or I had returned home late and just wanted to get my MOYD achievement in!

I also agree with you that listening is important and useful. I have started recording myself more -at 2 weeks into learning a piece, at 4 and when I think it is ready. By listening to myself when I'm not playing, I can really hear where I need to work. The resources available with youtube recordings are also fantastic. I like to find a good recording and play tricky parts over and over til I really have them fixed in my mind. Sometimes you can see exactly what the fingerings are too, and that helps.

Listening, however, no matter how wonderful it is, doesn't count as a MOYD activity smile

Please sign me up for 2013. I have not missed a day so far this year. I was actually doing very well last year until I ended up in the hospital in December. I know I will miss a couple of weeks in the fall because we are going on a long vacation.
Thanks, Judy

Re: MOYD 2013 - 02/05/13 11:06 PM

I thought I was doing pretty well until this last weekend when I missed practicing both Saturday and Sunday. Ding-double-ding, darn it!

Back on track now as of yesterday 2/4.

Thought/query for the day: My teacher knows I've been struggling to work regular practice into my schedule, so we've talked about all sorts of things ... Just as I was leaving my lesson today, she stopped me to encourage me very strongly to practice everything we'd just gone over tonight, not to wait until tomorrow. She considers a lesson day "the most important day" for a student to practice (and to specifically cover the material from the lesson to reinforce it).

I thought of the MOYD rules and how we consider lesson time a fair replacement for practice time. My teacher's been teaching a long time, and she's very, very good at it, so I'm taking her advice to heart ... but I'm curious. What about the rest of you? Does your teacher say to practice at home after a lesson? Anyone particularly in favor of (or opposed to) practicing after a lesson?

Re: MOYD 2013 - 02/05/13 11:21 PM

I always practice after a lesson for that very reason -- it reinforces everything we've just gone over, and prepares me for what I'll be working on the rest of the week. I think I would forget too much if I waited until the next evening to practice.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 02/06/13 08:51 PM

I almost always practice after a lesson. The school where I take agrees with your teacher that it is the most important time to practice. My teacher writes notes in my notebook and I also record my lesson but still feel it's important to practice after a lesson. I am fortunate that I do not work in the afternoon on the day of my lesson so I can often stay right at the school and practice until the kids get out of school as there are pianos available early in the afternoon.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 02/07/13 02:34 AM

I generally don't have time to practice after my lesson now.
I finish and then have to scoot home, have a bite to eat and get out to (teach) my evening class. By the time I get home I'm usually pooped and don't usually play.

When I had my lesson earlier in the day, I would go over what we'd talked about in class. It did help, and it is too bad I can't always do it now.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 02/08/13 12:21 AM

I did practice material from my lesson that same day and think it was helpful to solidify what we had discussed, so I will be making a point of continuing to do that.

My biggest problem, though, is simply getting in sufficient daily practice. It's so easy to push it aside throughout the afternoon/evening, while telling myself that I'll get to it after whatever else is demanding my attention. Next thing I know, it's late, I'm tired and I'm just sort of fiddling at the piano for 10-20 minutes. That's just not enough time (and energy/concentration) to make any real headway. *sigh*

Priorities!

Please put me on the naughty list for yesterday. It was snowing outside, and I had muscle fatigue all over my body from a seizure earlier in the day. I just didn't feel like wheeling 3 kilometers in that weather to go play at the pub.

But I did take it upon myself later in the evening to go out for pizza with a friend, so I probably could have gone out to play, too. I was just lazy. No excuse.

Hello everybody! I'm back from my ski vacation. A very nice week, except for the polar cold on the slopes, especially from Friday.
We arrived at home earlier than expected, so today I could practice for a solid hour - Casinitaly, could you please modify the days in the excused list?

Re: MOYD 2013 - 02/13/13 01:24 AM

I had two days where I was really short of time but forced myself to play. One day I ran through a Hanon exercise a few times(hopefully that counts!), and the other I just ran through a piece I'm working on. I was just gonna skip it, but MOYD is making me feel guilty if I do nothing, so I guess it's working!

Of course your Hanon exercise counts !

Next time you think you're feeling guilty about not playing....try saying "I feel INSPIRED to play!" smile That's much more fun than guilt !

Had another seizure at work yesterday (yeah, it's been one of those weeks ...). Broke the backrest on my wheelchair in the fall, and was predictably tired and sore. But went out and found a cab driver who dropped me off, on crutches, at my regular practice spot.

Will never use being tired and sore as an excuse not to play the piano again.

Thanks, MOYD! It's working.

This is the third time in my life that I am undertaking a serious attempt at becoming a halfway decent (albeit decidedly amateur) pianist, SwissMS. The previous two attempts both ended very prematurely, and both times, I told myself that the reasons for it were out of my control.

But that's not entirely true. Life threw some speed bumps onto my path (as life is wont to do for everyone), and I chose to let them stop me.

This time, I will not let that happen. Because if I do, I will regret it, and I want no regrets. Regrets make people bitter.

So yes, I am determined, and I believe that if I commit to sitting on the piano bench for at least an hour a day for the next ten or more years, I *will* achieve something I can be proud of.

MOYD seems like it can potentially be a great tool to help me get there. But despite having kept my commitment to it today, I noticed it could also easily become a hindering factor if I let it. I was feeling really tired, even while playing (which isn't how it usually goes), and some part of me thought 'well, I've played for five minutes, which is all I promised I'd do. I could go home now.'

In the end, I still played for an hour, but mostly things I already know well. Didn't make much headway on the Moonlight part two. Pity.

Will do better tomorrow.

Yes! Ten months to go.

During February, we lost power for a couple of days. But I still practiced scales and fingering without sound on my digital piano. Those practice sessions were quite interesting, as I imagined the sounds as I pressed the keys.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 03/05/13 07:33 AM

For sure! The quality of my imagination is far superior to what I play in reality.

It's funny, I do find that my recordings sound better than what I hear at the keyboard. I have started to turn down the sound while I play. But MOYD has been great for me and I am enjoying the journey.

It's going to be tough tomorrow. We're driving to the Einaudi concert straight after work, so there won't be any time to play! I doubt the audience would appreciate me replacing Ludovico just to get my MOYD in, hehe. Will try to get up early so I can get some time on the keys before work. I have to be careful not to spend TOO much time playing, or the boss might get angry laugh

Please add me to the list.

I am completely new to the piano, and to music in general. I don't play any musical instruments.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a new digital piano (Casio AP220), which is theoretically for my 40th birthday next month. I am currently working on "Frère Jacques", "London Bridge", "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", and "Mary had a Little Lamb". Also on note identification, using a couple of apps I found at the android store.

I am the only person in this list this I consider to be actually worthy of the term "beginner"!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 03/26/13 01:47 PM

Afraid I have to ask for a day's grace for 3/27 -- must leave home for business around 6am and then meet a family obligation afterwards that will keep me out late.

I'm still hoping I can at least play a tune or two on the digital w/headphones when I get home, but it may not work.

I'm not happy about that -- so far this year I've actually practiced at least something every single day -- I'd never have thought that possible with my work travel schedule. Mind you, not every day has been two or more hours of work on a real piano, but the vast majority of them have been.

Thank goodness the NP-11 can go with me almost anywhere. It's not a thing of beauty nor yet a joy forever, and it's not quite in the same class as my acoustic piano -- but it's a sight better than nothing at all!

Well,ok. You can't practice every day. Fine.
But may I ask, why did you sign up for MOYD? smile
Maybe you didn't really understand what it is? I think it is pretty clear on the first page of this thread - but maybe you didn't really read it.. I don't know.
MOYD is a personal challenge where you commit to playing the piano for some amount of time every single day. It might be a few hours, it might be a few minutes - it doesn't matter. If you miss a day you must come here and say so.
So... no, I wasn't going overboard being critical or anything like that. This is the challenge we set for ourselves we aim to play every day and we check in when we don't. It isn't everyone's cup of tea.

It's very much a fun thing. But the essence of the idea is you sign up (which I believe one could still do for this year) and commit to spend at least SOME time practicing the piano every day -- or else come to the thread, mention your omitted day, and receive pianabsolution.

Obviously, it's all about self-motivation through interaction with others making the same pledge and participating in the same process.

No one has to do it, of course, but that's what the thread is all about for those who care to participate.

**As best I understand it, of course!**

Managed to get a half hour of serious practice in at the end of the day, so I'm still "pure" for 2013. Wish me luck on keeping that up -- I have a heavy business and family travel schedule for the next month.

Tonight, after my better half and I had "date night" out -- and after I had put in a long day of meetings downtown -- we capped the evening by getting his-and-hers matching traffic tickets. Don't ask. The only thing that could calm me down after that was a bit of piano playing...

Missing my piano. It's spring break and taking time with my husband is important to me. This year I suggested we fly to Phoenix (Scottsdale really) and enjoy a couple of Spring training games with the Rockies. Blizzard in Colorado last Saturday. We made it to the airport at 5 am and listened to United say just 30 more minutes and we'll check the weather until finally about noon when they cancelled our flight. We got a son to drive through the really nasty weather and come get us. Luggage was who knows where. At least I had my piano at home AND I finished a paper I was working on. Monday morning we tried again and made it to sunny Arizona. Found our luggage locked in a case at the airport. Tuesday we met up with FarmGirl for some piano sharing...actually the husbands did not play piano but enjoyed tech talk and when they pried us away from her lovely piano we went out to dinner. What a great time (see our picture in the AOTW thread). Back home to the piano on Saturday. SO...put me down for Mar 25, 27, 28, 29 as out of town.

I had a busy day and couldn't get to the piano until 23:40. Just in time to count as "today", but too late to play on my baby. The digital... ugggghhh it feels and sounds so bad now. The sound kept falling away under my fingers as the pedal reacted very differently to what I'm already used to. Almost complete lack of sustain sounds really bad with the kind of music I like to play (or with anything, really). It felt like a chore for the first time this year. One gets spoiled quickly!

There was a sign twin to that on a piano in the lobby of a hotel I stayed at last summer in Portland. I spoke to the assistant manager, and she told me that it was there to keep small "chopsticks" children away during the day, and drunks at night. She gave me permission to play, and I did every day I was there. Moral to self: sign or no sign, ask permission to play. If the manager says no, what have I lost?

Re: MOYD 2013 - 04/02/13 08:47 AM

I need to go on the naughty list for this past Saturday (March 30) ...

This really bums me out, because I managed to keep up daily practice for all those weeks when I did not have a piano at home, and now that I do, I simply oversleep and have to rush out of the house to meet my friends for lunch, then rush to a doctor's appointment ... then come home, have a seizure, and fall asleep like a brick.

Ugh.

Welcome back Andy!

Saranoya....that's tough, indeed - and really irritating for you after you managed so well while you were between apartments!!! Hope you're feeling back to normal today.

Sorry to hear that Saranoya,
I sometimes get overwhelmed with "stuff" too. In fact, I do it to myself at times. I sincerely hope you get back to some bench time soon. BTW your Burgmuller Opus in the piano bar is quite wonderful. smile I'm envious.

Go ahead and take me off the list. I'm not sure if I'll try to get back on later or not, I just haven't been feeling motivated lately.

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling motivated. MOYD can work two ways - it can stimulate you to keep going, or it can start to feel like a burden.

Hope you find the key to refresh your desire to play!

I'm on pause. smile Haven't been near a piano unless it's at my lesson for the last while. Soon as I can manage I'll get back on the wagon. Right now I'm trying to just get a few days in a week. I'll let you guys know soon as I can get back on a daily schedule.

Meantime, this week I'm shooting for three days at the keys! (baby stepping back in... lol)

But I was unable to find an instrument while I was away April 13th - 22nd to help with dear daughter's wedding. So now I must ask for permission to join the "excused" list. Rats! frown

Just checking in.
I was talking with at piano teacher the other day,
trying to explain why I"m still on "book 3" after "playing" for an embarrassingly long number of years.
I offered the excuse that "I don't have a Mommy to make me practice anymore."

Then I remembered "MOM"D--It's the "MOM" that keeps me practicing now.

NOw I'm back up at the Winery for the summer season, it is such a lot of work. Between the vines and the garden my arms feel as off they are dropping off. If it wasn't for MOYD I would have passed on piano through sheer exhaustion. but I've managed to keep going, and now practise very early, for at east a half hour before I start feeling guilty about not getting on with other stuff.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 05/12/13 12:00 PM

MOYD works. I haven't missed a day of practicing so far this year. Even when I had a cold and didn't really feel like practicing, knowing I would have to "fess up", got me to the bench. I just passed 2500 hours practice total since I returned to piano as an adult! That seems like some kind of a milestone, but I know I still have a long way to go before I can call myself competent!

However now I will have a little break from practice. I am heading to Spain for a week. I need to be on the excused list from May 13-20. I should be back on the bench by the 21st! I will miss my piano (Mr. B), but I will enjoy the warmer weather. It is still cold in central Switzerland!

Wow, that's a lot of hours! I've never kept a log, I wonder...? I doubt I'll start, but it is an interesting idea.

EDITED TO ADD: So I just spent a few minutes figuring out how many days I've missed playing since Christmas Day 2009 - about 50 all told - (1 sick day and the rest travel, primarily when visiting family in Canada)...that leaves me with 1172 days of playing, and an average of at least an hour a day --(some days with just a few minutes but other days with several hours, most days with 2 30-40 minute stretches...)

I've put this here mostly for my own interest, but since I went to the trouble to calculate it, I figured I'd post.
So...roughly another 9,000 hours to go before I'm really good eh? lol.

Have a wonderful time in Spain - where are you visiting? Enjoy the sunshine!

I think I'll need to be excused tomorrow. I'm working in the provincial election - have to leave @ 6:30 a.m. & won't get home till 9:30 or later. &, since my digital's currently wrapped in plastic to protect it from reno dust (the reno was supposed to be finished last Friday) I can't really play before 6:30 am or after 9:30 pm. - too loud on the accoustic. But I've scheduled a day off on Wednesday, so I'll try to make up the practice time.

I'm currently in Australia (work-related) and will finally be heading back home (Canada) permanently to my wife, home, and better-quality digital piano. But! To save you the trouble, I will play piano that day, since it's still the same day wink I depart June 14th, and arrive back home June 14th. I can play the cheap digital piano I have here for a bit before having to head to the airport, to relieve some airport/flying anxiety.

So, don't mark me out for that day. I WILL PLAY!

Edit: I will never be an ex-pat Canuck - not by choice smile

Haha! The Trailer Park Boys are one of those things you can't believe your country produced (in a bad way). But, sure, if they're in my neck of the woods, I'll say hi to the bunch for you wink I'll surely miss your country, earlofmar - especially the Aussie (Rules) Football League!

Oh, and I played 2 hours of piano today, working mainly on the 3rd movement of Beethoven's Sonata No. 5, Op. 10 No. 1. Not on the naughty list just yet.

Don't be ashamed! When I have a horrible day, I'll pull 'em up on Netflix and laugh until I cry. It's so stupid it's brilliant. I think they've helped me stay sane on more that one occasion, so you should view 'em as a really ridiculous national treasure. grin

Made it to the public library's music center for a short practice session. So I'm still "pure," at least until next week!

I'm very grateful that the library makes pianos and practice rooms available to anyone who stops by to practice.

Judging by the very-well-loved condition of the piano I was assigned, my gratitude is shared by many. I am grateful, though!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 05/20/13 04:49 AM

I am just back after four days at a running event as a volunteer. I took my piano with me and got some practice time in the motel we were in three of the days. The fourth day however required me to work most of the day and then walk the course through the night collecting marking tape and directional arrows. So I was unable to play that day, but rest assured I am going to spend more time at the piano this week to make up for my falling off the wagon.

Thanks, AimeeO -- you inspired me to preserve my purity!

I snuck into the Allerton Hotel after dinner, where they have a clapped-out old Young Chang upright, and I spent a hard twenty minutes working through my memorized review pieces.

An ideal practice session it wasn't, but it was SOME practice.

It's definitely hard to count playing on a piano in the wild as a "practice" session in the traditional sense, but what you -are- practicing is performing in front of folks. That's important.

Thank you, Casini. I was trying to honor the intent of MOYD, not solicit critiques of my practicing habits. I might do that elsewhere on the ABF, but not in this thread.

I might, but I won't, because I think I already know the difference between practice and "playing on a piano in the wild."

It's definitely hard to count playing on a piano in the wild as a "practice" session in the traditional sense, but what you -are- practicing is performing in front of folks. That's important.

smile I didn't think you were looking for critiques or support- I just commented after Whizbang wrote in case any newcomers to MOYD got to thinking that it is essential for MOYD to PRACTICE as opposed to just play. Sorry if it came across the wrong way!

I need to put my name down for the excused list I have not practiced for five whole days, my piano looks so lonely the falboard is dusty. I caught a bad cold and no practicing from May 22nd to the 26th. I am determined that I will atleast play some scales tonight thought, this streak simply can not go on.

Can I join as a late start? I've played most days this year (even if it was just twinkle at the piano with a violin kid) but I can't say that I've played every day thus far. But I'm determined to do it for 2013! I completed MOYD in 2009 but don't know how to add a badge.

Hi Carolyn,

When I took over MOYD in 2010 Marybee made the badges and while we decided on making one for 2009 and 10 together - We didn't make badge just for 2009.

However, in this thread:

MOYD

you can get the base MOYD keyboard and add on the 2009.

Or you could go to the 2010 MOYD thread and copy one of the images that they used.

Just right clink the sig pic you want to use, go to properties and copy the url. Then paste it in your signature area under "my stuff" at the top of the page.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 06/07/13 05:09 PM

OK, I need to go on the naughty list big time.

My own piano is unplayable right now. Don't ask.

It's been that way since Wednesday, May 29. I played at my piano lesson that day, and again today when I had my exam.

Unlike the last time I had no piano of my own to play on, this time I did not find alternatives. No pretending to be buying a piano so as to be able to noodle on a store model for an hour. No playing at the pub. Just ... no playing at all.

Which was kind of a stupid move, the week before my exam. But oh, well. No excuse.

I'm hoping my piano problems will get solved tomorrow, when the tech is coming. So back on the wagon as of today (fingers crossed).

The rewards of evading a close call....

Sunday I was worn out, just bone tired (finishing up a renovation). So, if it wasn't for the MOYD commitment, I'd have skipped a day. But I haven't missed a day since May 2012, except when traveling.... And not gonna start now.

So I dragged my tired butt in there and parked it on the bench - and a miracle occurred!

Maybe being tired relaxed me or something, but Tchaivowsky's Italian Folk song stopped plodding along and turned into something recognizable! Many mistakes, but I turned the corner on that piece.

Yay for MOYD!

Count me absent for June 22-23. I was flying home from a conference (the one where I found a piano for most of the days in Grand Rapids). Now I'm in Lubec Maine without piano until my turn at Summerkeys next week. So..June 25-30 no piano but piano concerts. So the ear is still good.

t back a bit early . 21st, Friday last. It was great to play again and I felt so 'fresh' after break, but that didn't last long. Now I'm all thumbs again. For goodness sake it's only one note at a time.... Didn't get a chance to check out keyboards down in the states so putting that on hold for a while. Now the pruning situation out in the vineyards alter all that rain is desperate but I shall practice even if it's only 20 mins before crashing. Ownership is all well and good but you still have to supervise and I never expect anyone to do anything I'm not prepared to do myself. Too much of a perfectionist. That goes for piano too. I shapl have to let up and choose something for Ecco Fatto or I'll never do it!
No plans to leave until August so should get a good 7 weeks in. Piano is what keeps me sane!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 07/14/13 05:26 PM

I didn't realize that I should have asked to be put on the "excused" list as I was away on vacation when I missed those days in July.

Or is it "off the wagon" because I had access to a piano but did not practice as other actvities interferred?

Forgive my not understanding how this works. This is my first year doing this.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 07/14/13 09:05 PM

I have to ask to be excused for 2 days in June. They involved traveling to Summerkeys and back home. I was able to practice a little on the day we left and the day we were returning but we take 2 days to drive it so stayed over in a motel one night each way with no pianos.

For you, and the others who don't quite know how it works, the instructions are on the first page.

However, I suppose there is room for interpretation...

My personal take is that when you're on vacation, it is vacation and you're away from home. There may be a piano, but it isn't yours, you have to work with other people's schedules or the events of your vacation, so those days are excused even if there is a piano available.

That's how I see it.

And just for the record....I'll take this opportunity to say to the whole group....I don't need to know when you "think" you won't play. None of us can read the future. Please, just let me know after the fact.

Zillybug - ok, thanks for the update. I bet you had a great time!!!!

W/e up at Whistler for the open air concert with Vancouver Symphony playing Mozart,
Mendellson and Dvorak. Full moon rising over the Rockies - couldn't be more romantic.
Had no idea where we were going. To airport, OK, to Vancouver,OK, from domestic through Int'l to coach stop - was is Victoria Ferry or Whistler? Got closer and ended up at the Fairmont where picnic was waiting in time for start . This guy has been hanging around for 40 yrs and still can surprise me! Guess he's a keeper!
By the way, I wish I had recorded my playing before we left . Hope I play as well when we get back.. Still have to make my Ecco fatto debutt!!

Please may I be excused from 7/20-28, since we spent a week in France. I did have an opportunity where I could have played a piano but alas, I have zero items memorized. Without sheet music I revert to being a non-player. I really want to fix that, sigh...

On the bright side, on arrival home, I found that a book (free via Paperbackswap.com) had arrived.
"Easy Billy Joel Songs" so I'll have some for items for my collection of "Music I hope to play one day."

It's been a while since I've checked in. I'm not sure I'm even "on the wagon" anymore--I know I missed a week during vacation in June, and might have missed a couple other days here and there,
but it's still my intent to practice every day.

One of my big problems is finishing things. I've started a book "Music for Elementary Teachers" several times but never finished it, even though all pieces should be easily within my ability.
I so I'm planning to do piece a day until I DO finish it--unless I hit a harder one that take more than a day. I'll check in from time to time to report progress.
Started Day 1 p. 85 Skip to My Lou; Yesterday was Day 4 Grandfather's Clock.
today it's Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight p 89. The last song is p 254, but there are some chapters in between without a song on each page.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 08/19/13 09:42 PM

Still in there, in spite of some serious obstacles. The guy downstairs has been sawing intermittently for a week now - I think he's laying a hardwood floor, and cutting lengths of wood as he goes. Cut for 10 minutes - lay a section - cut for 10 more minutes. Sounds like it could even be a parquet design, with lots of really little inlaid pieces. I got up at 5 for a few days & practiced on the digital, so I could get some time in before he started. But today he stopped for lunch & never started again so I've had a blissful hour playing my accoustic. ♥♥♥ Maybe he's FINISHED!!
Posted by: Palmpirate

Re: MOYD 2013 - 08/19/13 11:31 PM

joyoussong - bummer! I am so glad i live out in the country. But then maybe I'd be bothering neighbours with my practice if i was in town. I use my headphones if its serious practise and my other half is in the house, otherwise I just love to hear the acoustic for myself. Wonder if your neighbour knows you play piano!
Posted by: joyoussong

Re: MOYD 2013 - 08/19/13 11:50 PM

I think everyone at this end of the building knows. But there are 2 other people with acoustics & 2 with digitals (plus me with both), so it's a pretty forgiving place. The woman directly below me plays too - much better than I do, she's been playing for 50+ years - so the guy on the ground floor probably hears her more than me. I usually close doors & windows, too, if I'm playing the acoustic.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 08/20/13 10:23 AM

If I can still join at this late date please sign me up. I have been playing since 4/1/13 and the only days I've missed have been four days of family vacation. I even bought a 61 key yamaha to take on business trips. You know for evenings in the hotel. I guess that will send me straight to the excused list...

Hi Mr. Square,

well, if you played on your portable on your trips, that counts!

Are you American (1 April 13) or other? (4 January 13) - if you meant January I'll put you down on the "pure list" if you meant April I'll put you on the late start list smile

I get home from work at 22.00. But that ain't no reason for me to practice :))

I'm American... January of this year I was playing blues on guitar. I started April 1st 2013 as a beginner with the Piano. Guess I'm a late starter all around. And on the family vacation, no, I did not take the digital.

Traveling on business today from dawn until very late -- will try for a bit of playing at piano store in NYC, but I may have to skip this one day. I would have fallen off pure list anyway in next three months due to international travel.

Could you put me in the "Late Starter" list. I just started playing in July, been practicing daily since then. Trying hard to make it a daily habit...

I am back home. We drove overnight, so I managed to play everyday.
BUT tomorrow I'm leaving again (this is our big big holiday, since we are going to China), so I will not able to play from tomorrow, August 28th, until September 11th.

Hi there,

Please sign me up as a late starter. I only registered on the 25th having got my new digital piano on the 20th. Have been away from the piano for a LONG time, at least 20 years + so a lot of work to do.

All the best.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 08/30/13 06:13 PM

Just couldn't play (piano) yesterday -- out to business meetings before dawn, then straight to an orchestra gig until midnight. I've already practiced today with more to come later.

Yesterday was my first day of no playing in 2013. Pretty incredible, for me, and all due to MOYD. Thanks for the nudge!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 08/31/13 11:18 PM

Hi, I've had more time for piano than I have had for Piano World, but nevertheless, have fallen off the wagon, traveled, gotten busy, missed days, yet still made lots of progress, especially this summer. I'm back on track now, as of August 30. I've already got a slew of new pieces for the next year of study and I'm really excited, some Grieg Lyric Pieces, Beethoven Rondo Op. 51, No. 1, and Debussy's Clair de lune among others, so I'm excited for daily practice! I'm also getting better at smart practice, which, for me, is even more important than the frequency.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 09/02/13 10:59 AM

I am devastated.... i did not play even a note yesterday... really I am so upset I'm grabbing the odd Kleenex to mop up sneaky tears as I keep remembering.
I miss enough with all the traveling we do.....
So what is my excuse.... exhausted. Standing all day and no voice left.
We were super busy down at the tasting room and stayed open later that usual, Busy and I suppose quite 'eu-stressful' i.e. exciting. There was a Japanese film crew around most of the day, helicopter visitors for a later picnic - chef had to open up his kitchen just as he had closed up for the afternoon - limo parties galore with crowds of 'staggettes' and 'graduates'. Couple of Villa tours for prospective weddings....
And I had started the day gardening 7am til 11am before opening time. Good thing I got it finished!
Fish and chips for dinner while we watched the news then straight up stairs and asleep by 9pm. Not even a Brahms Lullaby.
I have tee-shirt that says 'Live life with no regrets'
Well I don't have to garden this morning so I'm playing first. The day looks as if its going to be just a busy as yesterday. If any PW member comes visits, before you start tasting' you must ask me if I've practiced yet!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 09/13/13 09:00 AM

I'm back from my trip and to normal life.

When I wrote last time I made a typing error, I was leaving on August 27, not 28.
BUT it happened that a found a piano in Paris airport departures area (a sign invites people to share music) and I played it. My family was not believing I was doing it!!

Then, I visited piano shops in Shanghai and I played all the pianos I could put my hands on. Always the same pieces, my repertoire is limited and the memorized repertoire is ridiculous. So I played on September 30 and 31.

I'm here to report (after the fact) I was away on vacation from Aug. 28 to Sept. 13 and resumed practice on Sept. 13. A fantastic road trip including Arches Nat. Mon., Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, Grand Canyon, and Chirichua Nat. Mon. in the U.S. southwest. Awesome! Just about got drowned out in northern New Mexico at the end of the trip. Yikes!

Just landed in Rome this morning. After a jet-lag-compelled nap, walked around the Roman and Palatine Forum and the Coliseum, looking forward to a lovely dinner tonight and the train to Orvieto in the morning. What a beautiful city! Making plans now to come back to Rome for a week.

BUT no access to a piano today, so I must ask for a pass today and probably next Saturday and Sunday. I'm told that the inn at Orvieto has a piano, and I'm expecting to play there or at a nearby music institute called to my attention by dear Cheryl.

Ciao tutti!

Hey Cas....
Why don't you go ahead and sign me up for MOYD. Just in the interest of participating and supporting the idea.
I practice everyday anyway. Been doing it all year. Could have called some of it fooling around. Still had the hands on the keys.
My only problem now is how many hours.... Doh!

Sure Ron - you'll be one of the last to join as the cut off is 30 September! smile

If your question is how many hours for MOYD - that's not an issue - in a pinch 5 minutes at the piano will count, the point is to play every day. See the first page of the thread for full details smile

The trip won't have been a pianofest, though I've now lined up practice time on a serviceable upright, thanks to Cheryl.

But Orvieto is indeed wonderful: beautiful little town, great old streets and buildings, warm and friendly people, fantastic food, and so much more. Today I visited a working archeological dig in the caves below the city -- they had just unearthed some iron age tools and pottery (and some pornographic graffiti!). Very interesting. The pottery and the tools, I mean. Never mind...

For a Little While

When it all falls down, where will you stand?

On the sidelines, with a program, cheering your side?

When it all falls down, what will you say?

I knew it, I saw it, swollen with pride?

When it all falls down, some will rise from the dust

Tired and tried, unbroken but beaten, forcing a smile

When it all falls down some will say, I was there!

I stood shoulder to shoulder with Atlas, and bore the weight of the world

For a little while.

Work has been a nightmare!! Still my refuge is the bench time at the piano. Stay strong everyone.

Hey, Cas, I'm hereby declaring myself completely out of MOYD 2013. I missed the entire summer and can't see counting myself among the Masters this year even if special dispensation were offered.

Are you going to be managing MOYD 2014? It must take a fair amount of time, and your dedication is greatly appreciated!

Hi Deborah,

Ok, I'll take you off the list - you can try again next year if you feel like it.

I don't know if I'll do MOYD 2014. It doesn't actually take very much work. I have done it for a few years now though and I am wondering if someone else might enjoy doing it.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 10/14/13 09:17 PM

Please may I be excused for this last Saturday?

I was out of town, and although I took my music with me, there was not a piano available at the beach condo. I did practice extra before and after though!

I do hope you'll continue to host this! I find it quite inspiring and it does get me to practice much more consistently. Since I started (May 2012) I haven't missed except when traveling or one time when we had a houseguest in the hospital.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 10/19/13 12:49 AM

Late October is always bad for me -- I took the NP-11 to Taiwan this past week but was so busy with work that I only practiced once. I'll play my acoustic piano tonight and tomorrow, but then I fly off to more business meetings where I will get in little if any practice until Thursday.

After that the rest of the year looks pretty good, though!

So I'm asking to be excused for the last several days and the start of the next week -- then I'll be back at it.

I hate when work interferes with my music. smile

I practiced bright and early this morning, though. Hopefully I've learned my lesson about late night practice habits. Please demerit/restart me as appropriate smile

Sorry folks - but I simply FORGOT to practise the day before yesterday (been rummaging around in the loft, trying to insulate since its getting chillier) - and I'd been so good up til then. Bugger!

I can't afford too many lapses like that - as I've gone a bit mad putting myself down for a Tchaikovsky piece, for which I seem to need to 'grow another hand' as Peter (I think it was 'im) put it, to add to my Chopin mazurka, and a joplin rag, which I'm sure to regret.

Actually I wanted to say I've skipped yesterday.

One of the most profound declarations of skipping I've read.
Duly noted. smile

Re: MOYD 2013 - 11/30/13 04:47 PM

Please add Nov 25-29 as "missed" days for me. Had to cover a no-notice request help close down a satellite office and decided to tack-on a Thanksgiving visit to my son. No piano, no time, no regrets!

Thanks!

Of course no regrets! Family time is precious!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/02/13 12:28 AM

waaaah I messed up my perfect streak! I'm so annoyed with myself!

I have been so very good with my MOYD duties, I sit down and do something no matter how tired I am. Recently, I started a new job, along with keeping a shift at my old. I went from working 4 days a week to six a week - agck. And new schedule too - I went from working 6pm to 2am to 8am-5pm. Talk about culture shock! I also am taking a rather time consuming course, and I have managed to play something daily. My eyes may be half closed - but hey!

Until Thanksgiving (Nov 28).

I'm so mad! I was home, I had plenty of time, but I just didn't. The only thing I did was play a I and a V chord for BillyO. We were watching one of those Great Courses on music theory, and I did a demonstration. But I did not sit down down and play anything.

I am back on the wagon, however.

Oh, that's frustrating! But up you go, back on the wagon!

Well. I missed yesterday... My 21 year old daughter asked me to go car shopping with her after work... I got home late and just didn't have it in me. The worst part is my lesson is tomorrow... I'll have to tell my instructor that I missed a day. I practiced extra tonight to make amends.

Well Mr. Square, that's a pretty nice reason to have missed. Up on the wagon with you now!

Is this happening this year (2014). I'd really love to join it but I may be too late.

Yes, you're too late for this year, but there will be MOYD 2014, and we'll watch for you there!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/10/13 04:03 PM

A week out from Australia's longest (240Km) footrace I responded to a plea from an ultrarunner who had two people pull out from his crew. It was a big decision knowing I could not play piano at all during the event, but having crew experience I could not sit by and do nothing.

So 4th - 7th Dec I was awol but back into my normal regime having lost nothing but gained a wonderful experience.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/16/13 10:09 PM

Well, it's two weeks till the end of the year and I eagerly await my upgraded siggy with TWO years on it! Yay!

I have practiced every day except for the days when I was out of town on vacation. Most days I practice twice - a half hour in the morning before work then whatever I can manage in the evening.

Note that I said I practice, not that I PLAY.... Maybe that will happen in 2014.

Looking forward to signing up for next year's thread. This thread is an inspiration.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/17/13 02:36 AM

Way to go Oongawa! I'm finishing up my 4th year and though I've been away on vacation for various amounts of time I've only missed 2 days due to feeling sick. My hubby knows I'm really not well if I don't even play a few scales!

Most days I practice, but some days I just play smile

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/21/13 10:29 AM

Oh no! Does anybody have a remedy for splitting fingers? We've had a cold, dry winter here this year, & I've got a split finger on the outside tip of RH 4 - right where it hits the key. frown Yesterday I only managed to play through a couple of Christmas carols, & it was a real struggle. (typing's not easy, either) I don't know if I played long enough to count - don't think it was 10 minutes, so I guess I have to be excused for yesterday.

As soon as I got up this morning, I tried working on the new piece my teacher assigned on Thursday - Mozart Menuetto 1 in C Major - & the finger's a little better this morning, I think because my hand hasn't been in water yet. Definitely played for more than 10 minutes this time. If I can keep my hand out of the dishpan today, maybe I can get it to heal.

I'm also going to be away Dec 30-31 & Jan 1, so I'll need to be excused for those days, too.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/21/13 10:37 AM

Ouch - Carol!!! That must hurt like the Dickens!

Please note we don't set a time limit. Obviously the more the better, but if all you can squeeze in is a run through of scales or a section of a work in progress or a run through of an old familiar piece....well, that counts.

Try to keep your hand dry - and maybe some vitamin E or aloe vera cream might help with the healing - I think B12 can help with healing too.

I'll mark you away for Dec 30-31 and Jan 1...well, you'll just start MOYD 2014 on the 2nd!

I don't count "Late" starts til the end of Jan, beginning of Feb.

Take care!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/21/13 12:48 PM

Thanks Cheryl - so I can put a star on my calendar for yesterday? I've been putting vitamin E on my finger, & I found the rubber gloves I used when I had surgery on that hand a few years ago (why is it always my right hand??) They're some kind of industrial or surgical gloves that our pottery studio tech uses to mix glazes, not tight-fitting, but thin enough that I'm actually typing with the glove on right now & it cushions my "wound" a bit.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/21/13 12:52 PM

Yes, indeed - you can keep your star for yesterday my dear!
I'm glad you've got the gloves handy to help you out while you're healing!!!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/22/13 09:56 AM

i will be gone form my piano 22nd Dec til Jan 3rd 2014. Holiday visits to Boulder CO with my two other sons. One has a piano so I will get some time on the keys there but hardly any 'practice'! It has been an incredible year but I have kept my vow to play every day that I can, and it has really been a wonderful thing for myself.
When do we sign up again!

Sign up for MOYD 2014 will be just before 1 Jan - around the 29th of Dec.

Have a lovely time in Boulder!!!

Nutrogena Hand cream, in the tube is tremendous for healing split fingers. Use it regularly to prevent splits too.

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/23/13 11:18 AM

Dynamobt, thanks for the tip. This one's healing up fairly well, but this has become a recurring problem the last 3 or 4 winters, so I'll get some Nutrogena. smile

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/23/13 11:28 AM

When I signed up for MOYD last January, I was not sure how I was going to practice/play each day (for a whole year!). I can not believe how easy this was to complete. My time at the keys is sacred to me - and I look forward to it each day. And without this thread, I am not sure I would have had that little extra push. So I want to thank you all for "being there" for me; and especially I want to thank casinitaly for organizing this terrific group. Happy New Year!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 12/23/13 12:46 PM

Scorpio - I agree with you - having this community to give us a little "push" to keep on track does help.

It's my pleasure to coordinate MOYD - It's a way to give back to PW - and it's fun too!

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/01/14 12:58 PM

Hey Cheryl, do I get a 2013 badge? Looking at my calendar, I only missed 1 day in May, & that was for travelling.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Carol
Posted by: casinitaly

Re: MOYD 2013 - 01/01/14 06:13 PM

Yes indeed you get a badge Carol ! If you are travelling, you are on the excused list, and those who are excused get a badge.

Actually the only way to NOT get a badge is to give up!

If you missed for being ill, or being away, you go on the excused list.
If you missed and re-start you get back on the wagon --- the only way to forfeit the badge is to not get back on the wagon!

Go get that badge!

Congratualations to everyone who participated - if you made it go over to the new thread to collection your badge!

You will see the badges in the first post of the thread - and there are also instructions for how to get the images into your signature line.

If you didn't make it through 2013, you can give it another go!
