Yamaha P155 - how to improve the cosole? - 02/16/11 12:16 PM

Has anyone tried putting the Yamaha P155 in a better furniture console? Please advise. I really want to buy this one as oppsed to YDP181 (whcih is 600 bucks more) but the stand is really not good. I want something whcih looks like YDP181 but has P 155 inside. Please advise.

Understood. The stands made for keyboards don't look good.

Others here have posted about their homemade keyboard stands. Some are quite nice.

Or you could adapt a suitable piece of furniture for the job.

If those options don't suit you, just get the YDP181.

Are you looking for the Yamaha LP140 stand? That is Yamaha's matching stand for the P155. Is much like the stand you get with a YDP series piano but has color to match the P155. The LP140 bolts to the underside of the P155 using four machine screws just like the YDP stands.

The YDP181's stand has wood-print plastic laminate over particle board while the LP140 has charcoal gray laminate but from a design point of view the two are about the same. The LP140 costs $100 which is high for what you get but there is no better option and it does have a kind of "furniture look" to it.

Thanks for your replies.
I don't like the LP140 stand. I want something which looks more like a console than merely a stand. Like YDP 181. I think I will have to go for the 181 and compromise on sound a bit. :(((

A lot of people place cosmetics at the top of their list of requirements. But even so the counter argument for the YDP series is that the build quality is Ikea-like at best. They look like fake pianos. not bad workmanship but obvious fakes. The stage piano and others types don't even try to mimic the style of a small acoustic piano and so don't come off as looking like a fake, they look like what they are, digital pianos. They sell all kinds. The CLP240 has sound like a P155, better speakers and better build quality oveer the YDP, so yu can have it all but at higher cost

you could screw a nice piece of particle board onto the front; sounds like a joke but from the looks of the 240 that seems to be 90% of the difference in the stand...it does have he pedals enclosed as well though.

I just had to make the exact same choice as you. Personally, I would go with the P 155. Really, I think all of those home console pianos from Yamaha are not very attractive anyways. Just go with the P 155 & put it on a nice table or something.

Reality.

You can have pretty much any cabinet you want, e.g.:

I heard that when cars were new someone was selling a fake wooden horse you some how pushed around in front of the car so it would look more like you were used to seeing. Placing a digital piano inside a fake "piano shell" seems abut as logical is the fake horse.

There are many very good reasons to like real horses and real acoustic pianos but I can't see any reason to own a fake horse or fake piano shell

That's because you don't care if your piano looks like a piano! But some people do. I tolerated a keyboard in the spare office years ago, but I wouldn't want one in my living room.

There was a posting here last year about a craftsman in Europe whose photos indicated a very high quality result. It seems that the cabinets were specifically customized for the DP keyboard in question. Very nice results.
