Roland F120 vs Kawai CN-23?

Roland F120 vs Kawai CN-23? - 01/22/12 06:14 PM

Hi all smile

I'm new to the forums, fairly new to learning the piano and in the market for a digital piano.

I was looking at Yamaha YDP161, Roland F120 and Kawai CN23. I've pretty much ruled out the YDP161 as I liked the sound but not the touch. I'm now trying to decide between the F120 and CN23 and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or experiences to share?

I thought the F120 felt okay (heavier and nicer than the F110) and sounded really lovely - except for one thing: the very highest notes felt and sounded a bit weird (maybe kind of echoey?). Has anyone else had any experience of this, or any opinion on whether this will affect my enjoyment of playing and learning for my first few years as a beginner?

I thought the CN23 was quite nice too (maybe I didn't like the piano sound quite as much as the F120 but the higher notes sounded better). I'm not sure though - I tried this one out at the last minute and in the UK it's a bit more expensive than the F120.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate any comments - especially from people who've tried these models, or even own them. It's tricky to decide and because I don't have the piano-playing experience I just don't know what will bug me in the long term!

Many thanks smile

I think you should also consider the new Roland RP301 model,

I decided to get the fp4f (same action and sound of the f120) over the CN23. I just loved the SN sound of the Roland. The action of both are great.

Hi I just played the CN23 yesterday. I really liked the sound and the action. Actually I really enjoyed playing this piano a lot. I tried buying it but the dealer didn't give me the price I had seen a few months ago. (I was really shocked because he said he had a few in stock) almost like he knew I wanted it so he could charge whatever he felt like. It's driving me crazy,

I didn't try any Roland's but plan to tomorrow or the next day. (I haven't really liked most of the Roland keyboard actions but I'm willing to try again)

I did play a P155 and liked it except I found the volume from the speakers and my headphones really low. The 161 has the same action but better speakers I believe.

My favorite is probably the Kawai but it is the most expensive of the 2 I tried. I don't have any idea of Roland prices yet.

I would suggest pick the one with the action you like best. If you don't like the action it becomes annoying to play. Good luck,

What is the difference between the F120 and the RP301 (besides the housing)?

I was also thinking of buying one of these two DPs, but I do not like the Keyboard action and the general sound of Kawais. Also consider the CN33, which has some very nice additional features compared to the cn23.

I really like the Roland sound of the F120, the keyboard is also nice, but the internal speaker are totally [censored] IMO- I decided to think about the fp7f in order to minimize the compromisses...

EDITH: I also really like the outer appearence of the F120, looks absolutely fantastic.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the great advice smile.

I've finally managed to make a decision on which model to buy. I decided to go with a white F-120 in the end. Taking ZoeCalgary's advice, I decided to go with the action I liked best, and trying them out again today, I preferred the action of the Roland. I know the speakers aren't great, but I think they are easily good enough for my purposes (small room, mostly using headphones anyway) and overall I love the piano sounds. The compactness is great too, and although I'd prefer a more natural wood colour, I think white will blend in nicely against the white walls.

I've ordered through Thomann (German shop) and can't wait for it to arrive. In the meantime I just need to find a teacher and some half-decent headphones!

Congrats on your purchase!
But is there any particular reason you didn't buy from the store that allowed you to test the different instruments?

Cheers,
James

Hi James,

I tested the pianos at a couple of different stores, but in the end the store choice was down to significant price differences, included extras, and availability of the white model in stock. smile
