casia privia px130 vs px150

So after trying to be cheap and getting a william's allegro digital piano and returning it(terrible sound and weird velocity response), I now want to get either the px130 or px150.

I'm mainly concerned about the sound of the piano samples and how it responds to hard/softer touches.

Anyone have experience with both and can comment on the main differences?

My opinion is probably biased (I bought a PX-350 recently):

PS -- Tim Praskin is a dealer, and may be biased. But "PianoManChuck" seems to just like the newer model.

PPS -- the PX-150 and PX-350 share a lot of things, including their keyboard mechanism and 5 basic "grand piano" voices. The PX-350 is loaded with goodies, and substantially more expensive.

Even if the PX130 and PX150 had the same electronics and sounds the PX150 has the better/improved keyboard action shared with the PX350.

My advice would be to try both and then make your decision. Personally, I'd go for the latest and greatest, but the PX-130 should be heavily discounted if money is the deciding factor.

As an example, recently I tried out the new PX-350 and to me, the touch wasn't significantly better than my PX-330 and I thought the simulated ivory keys felt weird, to someone else that might be a completely different impression.

Both the PX-130 and PX-150 sound similar. They are sampled off the same piano. What's different is the sound chip. The PX-130 has the AIF and the PX-150 has the AiR. I've played the PX-130 many times. I've played a PX-150 and PX-350 but didn't get to spend much time when I did as I was pressed for time. The action feels similar although the PX-X30 series keybeds had wobbly keys. The new PX-X50 series keys feel much better with less side to side play. The PX-X50 series also has a richer more defined piano sound and the sustain is longer than any previous Casio due to the new AiR chip. I don't know what a PX-130 is selling for now (they retailed for $499 and could be bought for less on sale). If the difference in price is $100, I would opt for the PX-150. I wouldn't say the PX-150 is leaps and bounds better over a 130 but is more refined and Casio is going to sell a lot of them.

I would try both out if possible- just because something is new does not mean it is necessarily improved.

For a road type board- I still like the PX130. No question, I liked the x50 action but to me (and I won't win this debate with many people) the sound that comes out of the x30 units themselves is better to me then the x50 units.

In fact, I think the PX130 is comprable to the new Yamaha P105.

To me the PX130 action feels maybe even a little heavier than the PX150's.

However, if I am buying slab board with built in speakers- I want the best sound possible

I guess I am getting the px150, I have 100 dollars off from guitar center for it online so 599-100 is 499.This makes it exactly the same price as the 130(only still sold on amazon as far as I could see and for the original price of 499.

I was just making sure the px150 wasn't somehow worse, newer/different isn't always better.

That is not the only difference. The PX-150 devotes more memory to the piano, so even though the sounds may be generated from the same piano or the same raw samples, the actual set of sample data within the pianos are not identical.

Personally, while neither is my favorite piano sound, I do find the PX-150 to be noticeably better sounding than the PX-130.


I actually don't think the 330 and 350 feel very similar at all. But you and I do agree that the 350 feels better!

I actually thought that the new Casio felt more like a Kawai action than like the previous Casio action (though not as heavy as the Kawai actions). There's a smoothness and "elegance" to it, it feels more precise and "connected" than the previous Casio design.

Is this 100 dollars off something that's generally available?

I'm going to answer my own question. I checked their website, it is available to everyone (both online, and in store if you get them to email you a coupon), but today is the last day. Perfect timing for me.

I just purchased a Casio Privia PX 150 and was attempting to use the USB MIDI port with my MacPRO to work in Finale Notation 2011 Software. Have you had any success in connecting this Keyboard to your computer? Any tips on making it work? I did the setup like the instructions say for Finale and Casio and Core MIDI. Finale sees the Keyboard, but doesn't understand it's entry data.

There is a bug in Finale, it is ignoring the note on information due to the PX-150's high resolution MIDI velocity messages. They are aware of the issue and are working on a fix.
