Stand for DP for tall player

Stand for DP for tall player - 03/03/14 03:07 PM

...well...I say 'player' but I am a complete noob. I haven't yet chosen the DP, but it is likely to be the Casio PX150.

Now the DP is initially for my 7-year old daughter to begin lessons on, but I have also fancied learning myself, as has my wife! So, it looks like we will all be getting use out of this new instrument.

The thing is, I am 6'5". I therefore figure I need a stand that is height adjustable. I want something that is quite portable as we may move the piano around the house on occasion. I don't really like these cabinet enclosures as they are a bit 'in your face'.

Can anyone recommend a good stand for this type of DP?

In a follow up to my own post (!) many of the stands are cross type but some are banch type. Whilst the x-type look like they might be more portable, am I right in thinking that they would just get in the way of your (long) legs when sitting at them?

Not at all. You do not sit at a piano the way you sit at a dinner table, for example. You sit much further back, so your legs should have ample room at the bottom of the "X" there.

Also, it's not an adjustable stand that you need (other than the "x" types, I've never seen any that can do that), it's the seat that you will sit on. One that can be lowered sufficiently enough for you is all you will need.

Get a table type stand. They fold up and are very portable, plus they are adjustable and stable. X stands tend to wobble.

RE: your height, you will not want to adjust the height of the piano. You'll want it to be about 28 inches from the floor to the top of the keys. More likely, you will need an adjustable bench. Of course, some can be quite pricey, but some off-brand models are quite comfortable and easier on your pocketbook.

Here's what I use and really like it:

And here's a less expensive adjustable bench:

Avoid X-stands except as a last resort, because they wobble and do get in the way of your legs. If I were you I'd get the PX750, which is like the PX150 with a built in stand. It's not much more expensive once you've factored in the price of a stand, will be more stable, and has better speakers and pedals.

The bench height might not actually be an issue... I grew up with an acoustic piano with an un-adjustable bench that held music, and it served me well from the age of 12 to 18, by which time I was 6'3". You don't have to get a dedicated bench, as an old chair, with a couple of cushions if necessary, will probably do.

I'm thinking the adjustable bench would be helpful for him and his daughter. One can get by without, of course, one can get by with an X stand too. But since the question was posed what would be best, an adjustable bench is best. Also a little stool for daughter's feet to rest on would be good.

As I said, I don't want one of the larger 'cabinet' style keyboards. They don't look too good imo and it needs to be something I can move around the house easily when visitors come.
