We have a Gulbransen piano, serial # 328781 - where can I find the information about the make, model?

The Gulbransen was an average piano when new. Yours was made in 1937, based on Serial number. Unfortunately the value of the instrument, IF IN GOOD CONDITION wouldn't exceed $800 or so.

Thanks for your response. Our son is making the move from keyboard to his first piano after 18 mos of lessons. We're having a technician come tune it - If in good condition, how's the overall sound? We're in the middle category of moving him to a "real" piano, one that is good but affordable.

I also have a Gulbransen - 1929.

By now your tech should have looked at it and given you an evaluation. What's the verdict? How it sounds is going to depend on how large it is, and how much work has been done on it in the past.

If it has not had a lot of work done on it in the past (notably strings), it will not sound like a new piano - even an inexpensive new piano. With only 18 months of lessons though, perhaps it does not need to. If your technician is able to bring the action in to acceptable condition and it holds a tune, it might be just the thing for a beginning player.

If your son continues to play and you find that the Gulbransen might be holding him back, then you may want to consider an upgrade. Perhaps his teacher can provide input. Until then, enjoy what you have - espeically when your son shuts off the TV so he can play it.

...but keep in mind when you go to the site that they haven't made pianos in years and there is little info on pianos. In fact, they link back to good ole PianoWorld--have you voted for site of the month yet?--for serial numbers/age/value questions.

I actually sent a note to Gulbransen customer service via the website - below is their response.


Unfortunately, other than the age of the piano (which you can find out here:
http://www.pianoworld.com/gulbransen.html), we really haveno other information on these instruments. Gulbransen ceased manufacture of
pianos more than 30 years ago, and the company has changed hands several times
since. So your best bet is to contact various piano dealers.
