Hi:

I'm looking for some feedback on a used Cline 5'3" grand piano. SN 940899 which is relatively new. It's in great shape and sounds reasonable. The delivered price is $4200 and the teck is replacing the single wire base strings.

This piano is for an anniversary present for my wife to replace a 30 yr old Kimball that she grew up with and won't hold a tune. I've done lots of research over the last month and understand that it's probably made by Young Chang. My thinking is that if she really gets back into playing (which she wants to do), then in a few years, we could sell the Cline for nearly what we paid and upgrade to a nicer grand.

Does anyone see any flaws w/this plan? I guess I'm looking for some efficianado feedback since information on Cline pianos is pretty scarce.

Thanks, AJ

The Cline piano was made by Young Chang. I don't think there were any differences between the two. The name was used, as I remember, between 1988ish through 1995ish.

I hope this helps,

Just make sure you have your tech inspect the piano. If he gives it the thumbs up, I suspect you'll come pretty close to your financial expectations.(Although I'd guess about 3kish is what I'd count on.)

AJ,

That serial number, if produced by Young Chang (which it probably was)would put that piano in production in mid-2003. We still are producing Cline pianos for the Colton stores in the Bay area.

The new Chinese pianos had affected the used piano market. They are better than most entry-level pianos from the era when that Cline was made. If not better perhaps equal and they cost less than 6000 NEW.

If your wife gets back into playing, in a few years you wonít get more than $2500 for that Cline.

I agree with Jolly if you can get for $3000 is ďOKĒ

For me $4000 is a lot of money. I donít understand why would you spend that much, and then buy another one again.

Give her a chance to play on a better piano. If she gets back into playing, there you have a good piano.
If you want to sell it. A better piano will hold its value most likely.
At the same time, she had the chance to try on decent instrument.
The better the tool the easier the job. \:\)

After a lot more consideration and reading through even more posts and messages, I decided to pass on the Cline and instead spend the extra couple of grand and go for a new George Steck 5'8" grand. I'm still a nervous wreck and hope my wife likes it.

Thanks for all of the responses.

GEORGE STECK!!!!
Do you love your wife?
You are going from bad to worse.

It seems that you are looking to spend about $4 K that can hardly buy you a decent upright. Use that money as down payment.
If you are seeking for advice this is a good one, donít buy a low quality piano youíll regret it.

Would you please list all of the pianos you sell? That way any time some new person comes on here all they have to do is read it to see the pianos you like. Save everyone a lot of time. Oh yes, all of the other factorys can then stop production.
I have never been in the same room with a Steck Piano, can you tell me where you inspected one?

I visited a friend in San Francisco who performed with Oakland symphony.
It called my attention an ad on the news paper(new piano $1288)I went to browse the Piano Dealer in Burlingame CA.

They had some good stuff and the people were nice, but the piano is an amazing piece of crap.

Ok, perfect 88 now... use your little common sense and tell me what can you expect from a piano that retails for $1288? or a grand piano that retails at $4k

I don't sell pianos, I teach music.
But it is a real shame that a beautiful instrument such as the piano, becomes depreciated and sold like cheap furniture.
Probably by Bozos like you how can't talk customers into buying a quality piano. Any person who can buy a quality instrument will enjoy the benefits given by it. (musically and also as an invesment) ;\)

Rich was great. I just bought a used Cline baby grand and he was very helpful in making my decision. Even though I live in Texas. If you live in PA and want a piano, he would be a great guy to buy from!! Thanks for your post and for your time! Doug

I do not think it was necessary to revive a 4 year old topic to thank Rich. Next time, start a new one.
