This came up as question from UWBCastB on the now locked thread, "Inegrity Plea", to wit:

"Is Larry Fletcher - somehow related to Larry Fine?

Thanks sorry for the questions if they are inappropriate/unnecessary! "

****************

I sincerely hope that this doesn't cause flames. That is not my intent. I have noted on more than a few occasions in the past that people have been confused over the identity of Larry who used to post here and Larry Fine. UWB's query reinforces what seems to be a self-perpetrating myth of sorts. To confuse matters even further, the previous Larry's last name also begins with "F."

They are not the same person. Larry Fine of the Piano Book is not a poster here.

kathy,

Interestingly, I know them both (Larry Fletcher and Larry Fine) and I have never seen them together in the same room. Come to think of it, that is just like Clark Kent and Superman.

Maybe they ARE the same person. ;\) \:\)

OMG! It is[/b] Larry Fine. It seems we have an imposter.

Larry Fine (October 5, 1902–January 24, 1975) was an American comedian and actor, who is best-known as a member of the comedy act The Three Stooges.

He was born Louis Feinberg to a Jewish family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the corner of 3rd and South Streets. The building there is now a restaurant, and it houses a small Stooge museum. His father was a jeweler. When Louis was a child, he burned his arm with some of his father's acid, which was used to test whether or not jewelry was real, mistaking it for a cool drink. He received violin training to help strengthen his damaged muscles. This talent would be observed in many of the Stooges' films; in fact, when all three are seen playing fiddles onscreen, only Larry is actually playing his instrument, while the others are faking it.

As Larry Fine, he first performed as a violinist in vaudeville at an early age. In 1925, he met Moe Howard and Ted Healy. Howard and his brother, Shemp, had been working as audience stooges for Healy. Shemp left soon after to attempt a solo career and was in turn replaced by another brother, Curly. Larry's trademark bushy hair came out, according to legend, from his first meeting with Healy, in which he'd just wet his hair in a basin, and as they talked, it dried oddly. Healy told him, according to the story, to keep the zany hairstyle and lose the violin.

So, I wonder Larry Fine from the Piano Book get's the Stooge's mail by mistake. \:D

Larry Fletcher was a long time poster on rmmp, the old Deja net newsgroup, now found on Google Groups. He was on this board until he was banned.

He currently has his own board - PianoFacts - and prowls through the Coffee Room with his political and societal opinions.

Although bombastic at times, he is both a session musician and a long-time full-line piano dealer (Kimball to Bechstein).

There are two conflicting opinions about Larry Fletcher:

1) Larry Fletcher was designed by Larry Fine. Larry Fine created Larry Fletcher. The Larry Fine design gives Larry Fletcher a similar touch. Larry Fine's heritage is clearly present throughout Larry Fletcher. Larry Fletcher is similar to that of Larry Fine. Some people even believe that Larry Fletcher is a Fine and has the same origins in New York.

2) Larry Fletcher is from Japan. He is no different from any other Japanese piano technician, except that he is much more expensive--and pear-shaped. If you prefer a Japanese piano technician you can find someone identical to Larry Fletcher who can be negotiated for a considerably lower price.

really -

(you've quite the posted resume yourself Steve.... very impressive.)

disparage him all you want..... he may be gruff but he doesn't lie and his knowledge base is as extensive as any poster I've ever read here excepting a couple of guys who are experienced techinicians.. a whole nother area.

I am glad he is bold enough to set a standard as to what kind of information is allowed to hawked as truth.

he knows and publicly projects that all pianos are not equal and not entitled to certain inalienable rights as the salemen who recite their spiels seem to think...

that may not be popular... I know he was not popular with liberals

you should have read some of the fights he got into. They were so outrageous.. on both sides. Why I saved them I don't know... That's probably why I had to replace my hard drive.. I don't believe in incivility.. that's not what I defend.

I've never heard him claim to be a session musician, so I certainly didn't accuse him of being a liar. And I certainly didn't disparage him. I simply questioned Jolly's assertion.

(and for the record, I have nothing against Jolly.)

Hint: Just because you've played on someone's CD doesn't make you a session musician.

This is so lame.

Steve, do you have any evidence to the refute Jolly's statement, with which I concur having heard quite a bit about Larry's career, or do you just want to throw barbs and hide behind 'who, me?'?
