Anyone have any ideas on the date of a Cable Midget #284101 by the Cable Company of Chicago?
(The lady had no idea, but said it was her husband's grandmother's.) A search on the net showed a Cable Midget #288607 to be ca 1929 and a Cable (diff. model) #284039 to be also ca 1929, so that is about what I am guessing.

Also, I know NOTHING about pianos, so I would appreciate any basic info on the general care/cleaning of the keys and woodwork, and what to look for (parts/areas, in laymen's terms) as to other indicators of the piano's age.

I don't think it needs a tuning (to my naive ears), but how much does a tuning usually run?

I got the piano free (newspaper ad) and it is more for "show" in my formal living room, but after taking years of cello lessons and seeming to have an ear for music, my son can kinda tinker on a piano.

Anyone know of a good basic book on pianos in general and/or The Cable Company of Chicago and/or the Midget?

Thanks!
Briana

According to the Pierce Piano Atlas, your piano was made in 1928. If it hasn't been tuned in the last year, it needs to be tuned...
