Hello,

I was decided to wait little longer to find "the one" among new grand pianos, but was also interessed in old ones, especially rebuilt ones that can be in really good conditions.

During my search, i've played last summer a 1932 6'8 Pleyel grand, and really loved the sound, but the touch was too heavy and difficult to control.

Looking at ebay, i've found a same but older Pleyel and decided to have a look and play it (the dealer is specialized in rebuilding Old french pianos and Steinways too).

I fell in love with this piano and bought it immediately !

The technician has done a very good job on the keyboard to set it to my tastes.
The sound is marvellous, very delicate, deep and rich, a clear distinctive and singing tone, everything that i like.

Th piano is a Pleyel Model 3 (204 Cm or 6'8) from 1903. It has been rebuilt has you can see on the pics below.

Boy is that a beauty!

When does it arrive home?

Who did you purchase it from? It looks like there are some other very nice pianos there as well. I think I see a Seiler in the corner.

Enjoy! LL

It IS quite a beauty. How would you compare its tone and touch to the other pianos you've tried, for example the Sauter?

They just don't make them like this anymore, do they. Those are the best legs I have seen in a long time! And the wood, it's pure luxury. Next time I'm in Toulouse I'll drop in and enjoy it in actuality. Expect me around 2025 when I can afford to retire.
Enjoy!

Very beautiful! I'd just love to hear it, if it sounds half as good as it looks it must be wonderful indeed.

Well, ladies and gents, I think we have one very lucky guy here... Congratulations, fredof, this certainly is one of the most beautiful grands I've ever seen... an absolute gem!

May you enjoy the playing just as much as we all enjoy the looks!

Thank you so much for your kind comments.

As you may think, I am so happy, having a grand at home has been a dream for so many many years !
The ground of my first floor is not finished yet, I have to hurry finishing it before having my piano, it's a question of one month I think.

I've Bought it from a rebuilder well known in Montauban (25 miles north to Toulouse, and only 10 miles from my home !). Then you can find a dozen of grands, and here is a list of them that i've played side by side :
- Yamaha C5 2000
- Yamaha C3 1998
- Rösler 180 1920 (first pic, just behind)
- Erard Concert Grand (260cm, 1927 - third pic)
- Gaveau baby grand (third pic)
- Steinway O (New-York 1915, Black Polished - Third pic)
- Pleyel 164 cm (1925)

The Steinway O has been prepared and played by Cyprien Katsaris that is a friend of the technicien. The sound is clear and so rich, the bass is incredible for such a size. As many American pianos, it has a lots of harmonics.

The Erard has Three more bass notes (like Bosendorfer) and is a joy to play in the bass/medium register. The treble is too thin for my taste.

Yamaha C5 and C3 : I like Yamaha grand piano when they are bigger than 6'. The tone is really nice, but a little less rich that others brand there. The sound decays quickly too, but they are so easy to control with such a wonderful Keyboard!

To give you an idea about my Pleyel, I can say :
- The touch is as smooth as Yamaha C5, but a little more difficult to control in soft passages. It is made of Ivory, really nice feeling.

- The sound is as delicate as a Sauter Delta, and I found a similarity in the tone when you play soft (wide range of colors). The Sauter's action is better than mine, so I think it is even easier to get those differents colors. I think it is a question of practice. The bass section is clear and deep, similar in power than C5 bass, but deeper. The treble is bright and very rich (it reminds me the crystal sound of a Seiler 208).

I've bought my Pleyel 10 K€, rebuilt, bench, tuning at home, and a 10 years warranty (!!!).

What a lovely instrument. I like my poly finish, but I have a real appreciation for the variety and the craftmanship of these older pianos.

Wzkit, what do you use to record your Delta ?
I am planning to buy a all-in-one recorder like a Zoom H4 for example.

I use a TASCAM DAT recorder, together with 4 AKG microphone - 2 AKG 4000s and 2 AKG 451s. A fairly pricey but effective semi-professional set up. Depending on the kind of standards you demand, i think there are many cheaper options out there. Zoom H4 could be one of them.

Seems like a wonderful price for such a beauty. Congratulations!

Thanks a lot for your kinds comments.

This recording was made without any modification (no reverb, etc.) just near the piano on a tripod at 150 cm from the floor.

Here are two more recordings :
