Well, last night I attended the C. Bechstein grand opening and reception at their new center at 207 W. 57th in New York and I must say it was superb if every respect. The evening was for invited guests who were technicians and their spouses from New York, New Jersey and Long Island and was well attended.
Following a short cocktail hour, we heard a presentation by the North American Bechstein crew, Ken Ambrose, Robert Preim and Joe Vitti as well as viewing a short film about the factory about two hours outside of Berlin. And, just in case you're one who thinks if you've seen once factory, you've seen them all be prepared for a shock. Then, Mr. Karl Schulze, CEO explained their philosophy of absolute quality of instrument and commitment to the player with a number of playful anecdotes and entertaining asides concerning the "rest" of the piano world. This is only the first of a number of Bechstein centers planned for the U.S. With a 30% share of the European market second only to Hamburg Steinway, this is a welcome entry in an industry that needs category leadership. Then, THEN . . .
What a treat! A concert given by Tomoko Kanamaru, piano, Ruotao Mae, violin and Rodney Mack, trumpet. Ms. Kanamaru commented specifically that her selections for the evening were those that would best highlight the C. Bechstein piano, and were they ever. From the pristine bell like clarity of both outer and inner melodies to the subito mysteries which so fascinated Debussy and lastly a trio finale which gave every performer and audience member a chance to feel what gasping was actually like. Just unbelievable artistry! Making it all the more enjoyable was the presence of the composer of the Trio for Piano, Violin and Trumpet, Mr. Eric Ewazen, who had just returned from a visit the Russian where he saw and played on the C. Bechstein owned by Rachmaninoff.
I felt like the cheshire cat all the way home to Westchester. If you're in New York, make sure you visit this new presence on the American scene. It's right on piano row!

I was there on Thursday at the Grand Opening. I took a lot of pictures. I plan on posting a "report" over the weekend. Lots of pics!
