It's probably a double sharp(which lookslike an X). So if it's an F you should essentially play G, but harmonically you're playing F double sharp.

Dear applewave,

That's a double-sharp (i.e. ##), so raise the note a whole step.

For example, if it's F-double-sharp, play a G.

Hope that helps!

Sylvia

(EDIT: oops! looks like I posted at the same time as your two other helpers--sorry to be redundant!)

Does anyone care to explain what's the reason for using that symbol, instead of just going with the proper note? Thanks.

It's used to augment a note that's already sharped in the key signature due to the key.

Does anyone have an image or a link to an image? I started flipping through my sheet music to take a look but (much to my annoyance) couldn't find a single instance of a double sharp.

Chopin's music is riddled with them.

Did anyone yet mention that it might be a double sharp?

Just checking....

There is a topic in ABF called "Natural Signs" more on the accidentals (alterations) signs.

It was recently on the new topic list, so you should be able to find it easily.

That was said with tongue firmly in cheek.

Beware my use of ellipses....
