Help... I just bought a used 1986 Yamaha U3 from a private individual and I am second guessing my decision. I did run the serial number through the Yamaha website and it does check out to be made for the North American market but I did not have a technician check it out. Unfortunately in the excitement of it all I felt I had to make a take it or leave it decision. Anyway I did poke around and checked the condition of the tuning pins, hammer heads, bridle straps, bridge pins and the sound board and it all looked fine to my untrained eye. What would the price range be for a private party purchase? What else should I be considering to possibly make myself feel more assured about this purchase?

BTW, the number above the serial number is U3AR. What does the AR stand for?

A 22 yo made for market U3 in good condition would sell for about $3900-$4500 on the West coast. IMO 22 yo is getting a little long in the tooth for an Asian piano. Time for some issues to begin cropping up.
It is hard to reassure someone about an action that I do not recommend (buying without a technical survay).

Wow, thanks Craigen for your quick reply. I am kind of kicking myself now for not bringing a technician with me (unfortunate combination of spontaneous planning and being cheap). I guess my judgement was blurred in the excitement that I found a non-gray market U3. For what its worth, he did have the piano tuned yesterday and the technician wrote on the receipt that the piano was in 'like new' condition. Do you know what the U3AR stands for? The seller said the piano was a U3E but the inside says it is a U3AR.

Horse is out of the gate so to speak so what options do you have other than hope things work out which they probably will.

But I would suggest if you ever visit Las Vegas with your significant other you stay away from wedding chapels.

Take the low end on Craigen's price and substract another $400.

$3500 will be fair price for a US U3 22 years of age and in decent condition.

CKlin, if you are around the bay area, CA, a US U3 is not hard to find. Good luck.

Thanks Koiloco for the feedback on price. I paid $3200 for it so I feel OK on the price. I have been tracking Craigslist for the past several months and this was the first US U3 that I came across. In addition, I checked with several Yamaha dealerships and they all said that used US U3s were hard to come by. I guess the combination of these 2 reasons made me hastily jump at this perceived opportunity.

BTW were do you recommend looking for US U3s in the Bay Area?
