Greetings.
I just found your Forum and what a great resource on the internet.

I live in the midwest and recently saw a Yamaha U30 B1, 52 inch piano for sale at a reputable piano shop. The piano plays well and sounds great. Seems in pretty good shape (I'm not a technician so superficially it looked great...the sound, on the other hand, WAS great).

I've read some of the posts on your forum re: these U 30 pianos being "grey market" imports from Japan and other concerns raised about the U series pianos'/their age, etc.

Asking price is $5750 and I am not sure of the age of the piano (I remember being told it's over 10 years old).

I'm open to suggestions as to how approach the purchase, comments about the price and any concerns about this particular Yamaha model (U 30 B1) .

Thanks!

U30BL is a gray market uprt. not distributed via Yamaha USA to the authorized Yamaha dealers in the states. They are a newer mdl.manufactured in the Japanese factory which through the gray market are obtainable at a much "newer vintage" than the traditional U3.As a preowned piano one can acquire one in the states with a high 4-5 million serial #.The Yamaha U3 is a superior instrument but the trade off is that the U30BL is obtainable via the gray market "newer" Though the two pianos share the same strung back the U30BL cabinet is less substantial which may attribute to a thinner less richer tone than a U3.Yamaha is a bit vague as for the finite differences in their mdls. Asking price is high compared to the west coast in that the dealer has to make a higher mark in your venue.

Price is high for a gray market Yamaha.
Looks are not enought of an inspection. You should employ a qualified tech.
Pianos do not improve with age and there are predictible useful musical lives for each. The specific age is important as a consideration. My guess is you will find it to be between 25 and 30 years old. Too old for this kind of price.

Thank you both for your input.
Just to clarify, the piano in question is a U30 B1, not a U30 BL as "Pianobroker"'s note stated. Not sure if that makes a difference.
