Part I:

As some of you know, I'm the happy owner of a wonderful pre-war Blüthner grand. Although I am an adult beginner with meager skills and talent, I love playing piano. In fact, I can't pass a piano without feeling a powerful urge to sit down and play. So, needless to say, I find piano stores irresistible.

As a result, over the past year, I've played many different instruments, new and used, from Baldwins to Yamahas and everything in between. (The list includes, to the best of my memory: Baldwin, Bechstein, Bosendorfer, Boston, Essex, Estonia, Grotrian, Kawai, Mason & Hamlin, Petroff, Pleyel, Sauter, Schimmel, Steingraber, Steinway and Yamaha.) During this time, I wasn't (consciously) looking for another piano. However, as some on this forum can attest, occasionally an instrument speaks to us and we find ourselves reaching for the wallet when we never thought we would, should or could.

So, here is what my living room looked a while back.

But here is what it looked like the other night:

Yes, my beloved Blüthner is gone - fortunately, for now at least, she has merely taken up residence in my office.

But what could possibly replace my lovely rosewood Blüthner?

[NB: Originally the title of the thread did not reveal it would be a Bosie.]

Part II:

The living room did not stay vacant for long. The fine gentlemen of Fragile Freight found something wonderful on their truck.

They carefully maneuvered it into the house.

And the began unwrapping the new gift.

I suspect many of you can already tell what it is.

I can not believe your movers moved your GORGEOUS piano w/o using a grand board. They put that unbelievable rosewood finish right on the dolly.

Did you get it for a six-figure price? or seven? No, it's crass to speak of money. It's beautiful. Enjoy.

Those are the special edition rosewood "playing shoes" that come with every new "Special Veneer" Bosendorfer.

She really is a beauty. But it was her song that first got me. When I first laid my fingers on her it was like nothing else I've ever played. It is still very hard to capture with words, but the tone was delicate yet strong, clear yet mysterious, aloof yet immediate. The touch of the instrument was wonderful - so even and controlled.

The finish is an interesting story. Apparently, this is the only open pore rosewood 225 in existence. In fact if you click on Rosewood selection under the Special Veneer list on the Bösendorfer web site you will see (what I am 99% certain is) my piano. Special Veneer At first I thought it was a very similar instrument, but then I matched the peaks, valleys and swirls of the grain on mine to this one and they match. I figure the grain has got to be like a finger print.

Sadly, I was told that Bösendorfer will not make another one like her. But, in my case, the fact that this instrument was so lovely made it so much easier to convince my wife to get it. The Blüthner had made our living room a special place even when no one was playing her, so it really helped that the Bösendorfer was beautiful too.

Wow! Congratulations!

It is gorgeous. You really do have a "one-of-a-kind" piano, then. I wonder if they will ever make another with the same finish.

I like to play shoeless. It helps me controll the pedals. Interestly, on the Bosie I really feel the music through the pedal much more than on other instruments I've played.
