Ed is my 41 year old brother in law who is severely Down syndromed. He dictated this list so his relatives could buy him gifts:

lunch box
new soft swivel office chair on wheels
photo album w/pictures both family and monster
yellow back pack
helen box of coke
pens and pencils
snacks
marshmellows
pudding
m&m's
chips
box of gum
2 nuk nuk nuk tapes (3 stooges movies)
terminator
box of money
wedding cake book
tractors and monster trucks
head phones
monster record
monster on tv
big radio
monster hat
batteries
clock radio
2 boxes of coke
flashlite
monster shirt
red coat
chiefs
scarf
gloves
running shoes (like he ever runs)
room fan
theater card
applebees card
socks & underwear

Ed cannot read.. He can very neatly write capital letters and is good at cleaning and organizing "everything goes in the trash..(clothes, purses, gloves, dirt, mail". He gets paid a dollar to clean. He is really good at making lists.

His sincerity is beautiful beyond words.

Apple,

Thanks for sharing that. If you would PM me an address I would like to send him a gift wrapped flashlight--or somehting else from the list you think appropriate.

People ask me what I want for Christmas and I am always stuck for an answer. This guy has it all figured out. I think a "box of money" could be high on my list. Wish him Merry Christmas from me and my wife.

Eddie is a trip... Here he is singing rock and roll (probably the Monster Mash song) at the Karaoke mike.

He lives in a group home about 30 miles south of us (close to DivaDeb). He puts labels on test tubes for his job. He works 40 hours a week in a state run workshop for the handicapped... Part of his salary (and he is paid by the testtube) goes to his upkeep and care. He gets about 600 dollars worth of cash a year for his labor. If he doesn't spend it, it goes back to the state.

We had to take him shopping on December 29th one year, and 'had to spend' almost 500 dollars on him. That was a great, fun day.

Dear Jack.. kind one, I'll pm you an address. A single dollar bill will be enough to put him in ecstacy.. He probably has a flashlite or ten. Those are one of his things.

NAK, your poem is exquisite!

Apple...I love Ed's list and the picture. If you come out to see him over the holidays, give me a heads up. We have ballet tickets this Sunday and I will be in and out trying to get ready for Christmas since I was gone all last week. But I should be here more than not. Come in and have a cup of something hot.

Apple, I think it would be a shame if you didn't get him the "applebees card", apple. \:\) My sister also has some special needs, and honestly if you gave her a box of that bubble-popping packaging material, she would love it.

JBryan, I was going to say the same thing...'a box of money': can it get more straight forward than that?

NAK, nice poem...it reminded me of a fact to think about:

Apple - I love Eddie's list; I'm sure having him in your life gives you a set of different eyes and another perspective on things in life. Hope both Eddie and the rest of your family have a wonderful Christmas (you too \:\) ).

NAK - I'll add my echo, wonderful poem.

apple - my cousin too has Down's Syndrome. He is 25, and the most innocent, sweet & kind-hearted person I've ever met. He's just so uncorrupted, it's beautiful.

He owns every single Black Adder & Star Gate episode so when I see him we don't really talk much - just watch episode after episode.

It's shocking how quickly people are corrupted by the world. If there were more people who had the innocence of your Eddie & my Ed the world would be a better place.

Eddie's movie is the David Banner Incredible Hunk. We buy it for him every year. Either someone steals it, he loses it, or he has a major movie stash.

Oh, apple, may I do the same? How sweet. I work with 3, 4 and 5 year olds and I swear that my life long facination with this age (and special needs children and adults) is that they know the true meaning of life.

My long time HS boyfriend and I worked together at our town's rec dept. Our FAVORITE job was a program our director asked us to work together. It was a drop-in Sat morning for special needs kids (bigger than us!) so that parents could leave them in a safe, fun place while they had time together to run errands or just get a break. We loved that job so we would have done it for free! \:\)

Please PM me, I would love to play Santa!

OK, I want to play at Eddie's house. He has snacks, movies and tractor and monster trucks. (Seriously - I'm the Dad who thought the best thing about having kids was playing in the sandbox with all the toys). Only thing I'm wonderin.....what's a Terminator?

Arnold Scharzenegger movie.. The Terminator.

He likes the movie characters that approximate his sturdy physique.. The green David Banner inthe Incredible Hulk, Arnold in the Terminator and any other Arnold movie, Frankenstein from Monster Mash.. He thinks he is so cool because those guys kind of are like him, and they are the best.

Apple, I love this. I wish my name were food too. Rich Spaghettini? Rich Capellini? Rich Filet Mignon?
