Would You Like Live Chat - Live Recitals - Live Concerts?[/b]

There have been a number of threads on the forums lately about Live chat, recitals, and concerts.

I'd like to find out how many people think they might use any/all of these (hence this poll).
The poll is below these definitions.[/b]

What Am I Talking About?[/b]
Read on...

~ Live Chat (Text)[/b]
Live chat means you can log in and chat with any number of people who happen to be in the same "chat room", in real time.

It allows you to carry on more of a conversation than posting to threads.
http://www.pianoworld.com/ubb/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/topic/1/17118.html#000000

This is an example of some Chat Software I've been playing with http://www.pianoworld.com/TotalChat/ (although we may end up with something else)

Whatever you type is immediately posted (for everyone in the "room" to see).

I thought it might be fun to meet in a given chat room at a specific time, and/or to have "guest speakers" like Del Fandrich, Larry Fine, Scott "The Piano Guy" Houston, David Nevue, etc.

~ Audio Chat and Live Presentations[/b]
Same idea as the regular chat, except you can also actually "talk" over the Internet.
There are lots of options for this, I've been looking at some and others have been discussing this subject.

Keep in mind with Audio Chat, you don't have to talk, you can still just type. But... you could also listen to guest speakers.
[/b]
I've also been looking at video chat, but I thought that might be moving a little too fast for us right now :-)

~ Live Recitals[/b]
This gets a little trickier.

The idea is to have a number of people in different places take turns playing live.

The folks in the AB Forum recently experimented with this, read about their experience here...
http://www.pianoworld.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?/topic/32/3798.html

The challenge is finding the right technology.
This may be one possibility (they would like us to try their beta version)...

~ Live Concerts[/b]
Similar to live recitals, except it would be one person (or group) playing while the rest of us listen.

Please ... Take The Poll[/b]
So, please take the poll and let me know your thoughts.

For those who might be interested in these things, I think it could be great fun to take things to the next level.

For those not interested, don't worry, the forums will continue just like they are.

We should definitely schedule text chats.

For the live recitals, it would probably be a lot harder to work out than just posting recording files for critique, but if it could work, it might be cool. How much bandwidth would that use? Would that be a problem?

DantheMan,

Yes, it would be more of a challenge to set up live recitals, although I think the technology to make it easier is coming.

This one looks promising, but we need to test it to determine if it will work for us...

I will be talking with Alan Glueckman (president of the company) sometime this week.

You definitely need a high-speed Internet connection, with good upload speeds.

Alan claims he can jam with up to 4 other musicians in real time with his software, I'd like to test that.

It should work fine for one person "performing" live (as opposed to multiple players).

Of course, you need to be able to get the sound into your computer. For me that isn't a problem because I play on a Yamaha P-80 (digital piano) and a Hammond XK-3 (B3 type keyboard).

For acoustic piano, the quality and placement of your microphones will be a factor (and the interface to get the sound into your computer, similar to when you want to record).

Still, I think it would be fun, and worth the effort to look into this.
It's where the Internet is headed anyway, so the technology will only continue to improve.
