I enjoy reading about repertoire, and wondered if others do, too. What books do you have? What do you recommend?

Music for the Piano by Friskin and Freundlich is an old favorite of mine, as are Five Centuries of Keyboard Music by Gillespie and The Literature of the Piano by Hutcheson. I have some others, and also a few titles that treat specific groups of pieces like the Beethoven sonatas or the Chopin ballades.

What reference books do others like? In particular, I was curious about Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire by Maurice Hinson.

saw it at B&N and it's a good book for repertoire.

Charles Rosen's Beethoven sonata book is good too.

Hinson is pretty much definitive. Hutcheson allows himself to speak more freely, and I find it excellent.

Keyboard Literature (Gordon) is a good, general book.

Don't forget the other books for the Hinson, such as the Piano and orchestra book and his transcription book.

well - I've got pretty much the same set sitting on my shelf, Hinson, Hutcheson, Gillespie, Friskin & Freundlich. I also have a book by Krehbiel that is a more generic overview of the repertoire. Also some good single composer works - Tovey on Beethoven, Schmitz's Piano works of Debussy,...
I also have the Groves encyclopedia and other general references....

one other intersting read is "Men Women and Pianos" - not about piano works but worthwhile

Second and third and fourth the motion on the Hinson book(s)...the Tovey Beethoven sonatae (I think) is pretty much out of print, also the Girdlestone book on the Mozart sonatae might still be out there...there might be something newer but that was it when I was a kid-let...

wow, my very first posting here in this forum...

On amazon.com I have just created a listmania of 30 books on (modern) piano repertoire. Since most books mix classical, standard repertoire with modern, non-standard repertoire the list should still be useful for you. It is an ordered listing with the more upper entries being more useful for modern repertoire whereas the second half #18-28 deals with the classical pieces. Please let me know if my commented listmania was useful for you \:\)

Enter search keywords 'piano repertoire' there and you will find my

Recently, I have had occasion to refer several people who enjoy the piano music of Debussy to Paul Roberts' excellent study : Images : The Piano Music of Claude Debussy. Amadeus Press, Portland, OR 1996.

Paul Roberts is becoming internationally recognized as a solid authority on the piano music of Debussy, both as a critic and as a performer. I also have his video, "Mists, Fairies, and Fireworks; Debussy's Preludes for Piano, Narrated and performed by Paul Roberts." Amadeus Press, 2006.

Regards,
