Hey all! I have one student interested in taking his introductory level RCM exam, and it says that one song should be teachers choice.

I'm confused on that one... it says to pick something of the appropriate level, which i'm not exactly sure about since in the RCM Introductory level book there are some songs that are really easy and some that are quite a bit more difficult.

In the piano syllabus (2009 edition) it gives a long list of appropriate songs... are those songs that can be chosen as "teachers choice?"

I would venture to say that is the case...songs listed under 'manual, extra, or appropriate' generally, are pieces outside of the RCM books that teachers may choose for their students...but one phone-call to RCM will clear everything up for you

I have used other pieces from the syllabus for "Teachers Choice." It shouldn't be a problem. If you are using the 2009 syllabus, there is no "introductory" level. It is now split into Preparatory A and B.

So far I have not had an examiner comment on the level of the piece chosen.

On p. 130 of the 2008 piano syllabus, under the heading "Substitutions", one reads:

"A selection of the teacher's choice (Teacher's Choice) may be substituted for a study/etude at Grades 1 to 8. The Teacher's Choice selection must be of equal difficulty and musical quality to the required works in that grade. The Teacher's Choice selection should not exceed the normal time allotted for a study/etude, according to the level. (For example, at the earliest levels, the Teacher's Choice selection should be shorter than one minute.) Judgment shown in choosing an appropriate Teacher's Choice selection will be considered in the marking. Candidates should clearly indicate "Teacher's Choice" on the Examination Program Form."

It is not unreasonable to assume that the 2008 and the 2009 syllabi will not differ on this item. Noteworthy is that this is stipulated as a permission, and therefore it is optional, not a requirement.

Also noteworthy, given the first paragraph on p. 130 and the chart on p. 131, is that permission for these substitutions applies only to Grades 1 - 8, and not to any level prior to Grade 1.
