I just bought a new Ritmuller upright piano about three weeks ago, and today the sustain pedal started "squeaking". When I press it down fast, this doesn't happen. Only when I press it slow. I hope that this isn't a problem to get fixed. Should I be worried? The dealer is also a great technician, so hopefully this isn't a big deal.

My pedals start squeaking every 6 months or so. I remove the lyre (it's a grand), unscrew the bottom cover, and then unscrew the wooden blocks that trap the axes of the pedals, and then apply a little grease to said axes. I also put a dab of grease on the ends of the connecting rods that are pushed up by the pedals. Your technician should be able to (a) do this easily, (b) show you how to do it, and (c) supply you with some appropriate grease.

Thank you. I'm glad that this won't be a big problem. It's a beautiful new piano.

Those are good suggestions, but it could be any number of things causing the squeak. Some are easy to diagnose and fix, some are not. Upright damper levers have springs that can make noise, which grands do not have.

This is something that many--if not most--techs will fix at a routine service all. Squeaky pedals drive me nuts, and I usually won't leave until the squeak leaves first.

The suggestions pertaining to the grand piano are not directly transferable to your upright. Your dealer/technician should be happy to fix the squeak so that it doesn't return.

Paul, if you are a moderate player, say under 2 hours per day, and your squeak returns every six months, then your "fix" isn't working, is it? Properly working pedals shouldn't need grease twice a year. I suggest you are addressing the symptoms instead of the real problem. As such, it is not helpful advice for others.

Although I'm not a tech, I have had a similar probelems with a squeeky pedal. My master re-builder looked into it and found out it was my shoe on the floor. He put some of that master technician thing on it and it has never squeeked again.

Well, now I'm nervous again. It may not be the actual pedal that's making the noise, it might be the whole mechanism inside the piano.

Ritmullers, i.e. Pearl River uprights are sometimes known to squeak where the finish of the kick board contacts the rest of the case. On numerous occasions I've had to take teflon powder and lubricate around edges of the kick board to eliminate the "groaning" sound it can cause whenever you push down on the pedals.

Just one of the MANY... problems you can have with these Chinese wonders. I'm sure your piano is wonderful. However they have been known to cause much grief to piano technicians.

Yes, that's exactly what it is. A "groaning" sound.

The dealer will be coming back to my house next week to tune the piano. He said to wait a month so that it could adapt to its new environment. So I'll show him the issue then. But I will call him today so that when he comes, he will be prepared.

This all reminds me of an embarrassing thing that happened to me a couple years ago. I had composed 16 songs and was recording them onto a CD at home on my Baldwin L grand. I was recording the last song when I noticed an annoying squeak coming from the loud pedal. I called my tuner/tech in a panic because I had to have the CD finished before my concert which was the next day. He came over and checked everything out and couldn't make it squeak when he played the piano. Then he asked me to play, and there was the squeak again. It turns out it was caused by the my SHOE! I asked if he had any official Baldwin factory authorized shoe lubricant powder, but he suggested I just wear a different pair of shoes when I play. I'm sure he had a great time telling this story to all his tuner buddies! Larry Larson
