Hi fellow adult beginners,

The other day I wanted to record myself playing but I couldn't find any free MIDI recording software that I liked, so I wrote my own. It's called Red Dot Forever and it only has 3 buttons: RECORD, PLAY and SAVE. That's all you need! ;\)

I've been using this program a lot the past week and it suits me just fine. No doubt other people will benefit from it as well, so that's why I'm making it available to the world at large.

You can get it here .

Red Dot Forever is freeware. I only tested it on Windows XP, but it should run on other versions of Windows as well.

Enjoy! And let me know if you run into any problems using it. \:\)

Now you certainly no longer have an excuse not to participate in the next recital. \:D

EDIT 12-dec-06:[/b] Updated the link. Red Dot Forever is now open source and hosted on SourceForge.

I gotta say I love the name! And you can't beat the simplicity.

Mahlzeit, please forgive me, but I am almost totally ignorant of things like MIDI etc. Does Red Dot Forever do anything that Audacity does not? If not, I'll stick with Audacity since I already (sorta) know how to work it.

Yes, MIDI. ;\)

Audacity is for recording actual sound waves, and the resulting files are usually very big, even if you make an MP3 out of them. MIDI, on the other hamd, is the electronic equivalent of sheet music and the resulting files are very small. They just contain information about which notes have been played, but not the actual sounds. You'll have to play them back through a synthesizer in order to turn the notes into sound waves again. (Your computer has a simple MIDI synth built-in, but it usually doesn't sound very satisfactory. That's why a lot of people don't like MIDI files, but that's not really fair.)

If you have an acoustic piano, then you have no use for MIDI. The only way you can record from those is with a microphone and a program like Audacity. But if you have a digital pianos or keyboard, then you probably *can* make MIDI recordings. I prefer to record as MIDI, because I can make a ton of recordings without filling up my harddisk. \:\)

Hope this explains it a bit...

Some keyboards/digital pianos have a built-in floppy drive. If you have one of those, you can record on the keyboard itself and save to floppy. In that case you don't need Red Dot Forever. ;\)

Otherwise, you indeed need to get a MIDI cable. With recent computers, you're most likely to need a MIDI-to-USB adapter. They cost somewhere between $30 and $50 (here anyway \:\) ).

Did not see that one! Thanks Funburger and Matthijs! I gave it a go in disbelief, downloaded it, opened the file, and bob's your uncle...

Well not quite, actually nothing at all even to be honest. Funburger, HOW did you do this???

Oh wait, now I see you said "one of your programs". Not red dot I guess?? (The Music theory audio drills I bet?)

Just uploaded the new version 1.02. When making long recordings, the timing got messed up and the MIDI files weren't saved properly. That is now fixed. \:\)

You buy me a Mac, Pieter, and I'll see what I can do. \:D

Maybe you can convince someone with a Mac to make a Mac version. The program is VERY simple, and the source code is available at the above link too...

Hi friends,

I have just made available a new version (1.03) of Red Dot Forever[/b]. \:\)

This one fixes a number of annoying issues. There is now a separate STOP button, so an accidental double-click can now no longer overwrite your precious new recording. The PLAY function has been improved, and there are more options.

Download the new version 1.03 here: http://reddot.sf.net

Mahlzeit, I have not downloaded your program yet. Presently I have a Yamaha CVP-307 with a USB outlet. I stick a flash memory stick into the CVP and record Midi then save it to the memory stick. Then, for backup I insert the memory stick into the laptop and transfer the files.

My question is where would I be ahead using the Red Dot Forever? In other words what else can your program help me do?

Hey joemoshi,

I don't really see any benefit in you using Red Dot Forever in this case. You can already record on your piano, which is as good as it gets.

The only advantage is that you no longer would have to transfer the files using the memory stick, but that doesn't sound like such a big deal...

Not everyone has a sequencer in their piano, though. \:\)

Hey kids!

New version of Red Dot Forever out today! \:\)

It took a while but I have finally added support for "MIDI triggers", which allow you to control Red Dot directly and conveniently from your keyboard or digital piano. You can set up triggers for RECORD, STOP, and PLAY. This saves you some going back and forth between the piano and the PC.

Get it at: http://reddot.sf.net
