The KR line seems to be what I'm looking for as of features. The one thing I like most is the color touch screen setup.

I would like something compact, like the KR-15M Mini-Grand which has a flat body towards the back end.

I need MIDI in/out but the whole CD thing really isn't that important to me.

I mostly want to get something compact, something that feels like a good acoustic, and something that sounds great like an acoustic since I will be playing the piano sounds on this 90% of the time.


Another thing that is not listed is prices for the US...anyone have any ideas what these go for new and used?

I'm fairly new to the whole electric pianos. I have a Yamaha PSR-340 in my studio right now but I prefer the feel of my upright acoustic Yamaha...The thing I can't stand is how it always needs to be tuned and so I would like to go digital.

Do you need the mini grand cabinet? You will spend extra money just to have it look grand-like.

I have not looked at the KR-15 in about 2 years, but I did enjoy the touch and sound when I played it.

No I would not say I MUST have a grand piano style but I do enjoy the look of those type pianos and would be happier overall with a style like that.

On the other hand, as long as I get a great sound and feel I would be happy.

I'm also not looking to spend a great amount of money so if these Rolands are really high in price it may not be something I would get.

I don't know how negotiable Roland is when purchasing... I would guess you would spend 10K plus on that digital. This is pure speculation.

Why not get the KR-7?. I have one and it is the exact same piano (other than the cabinet) as the kr-15 for MUCH less.

I don't really understand why you would want to pay so much more for the *grand* cabinet when it is not a real grand cabinet in any proportion.

The re-sale of digitals is also not super great and you may pay a lot of money now for something you can not recoup later.

How about get something like a KR-7 (I'll even sell you mine cheap!) and then when you are ready to spend 10-15k, get an acoustic piano that will hold its value in the future.

The most important thing with the many Roland pianos is to be sure it has Roland's best piano samples as found in the RD700SX (every note sampled individually and at 4 levels). It's a whole new generation of piano samples and a really big improvement over the old samples which some of the Roland digital grands and other models still use (the cheaper ones). Also, a lot of salesmen will mislead you because they are not really sure about it themselves and want to make a sale. Roland is known for not making it clear which models do and don't have every single key sampled individually. Calling Roland in LA can get the true answers.

Ok so I found some prices on those Rolands and they are out of my price range which I am now setting at $1,200USD max. I would prefer staying around $1000 if I can get something that plays/sounds great at that price.

I have been looking at the Yamaha YPG-625 as i can get a good deal on it and it looks great.

So everyone, what would you say is a good playing and sounding unit out of my price range?

I just bought the RG-3 (Roland digi-grand)... It's the best i've ever tried... The price is about 4500£ but it's worth every dime...

And it's not the same sound you get from a digi-grand and the upright models e.g. hp-207. The 207 is great, but the grand has a much better sound (loudspeakers and amps)... but it's also almost twice as expensive...

Can you confirm whether Roland have fixed an issue that I noticed on the HP109 - not the new action I believe?

The only example that comes to mind (bear with me) is a Bartok piece. After playing a forte melody line which you sustain with the pedal. You return to one of the notes and depress the key without sounding the note and then release the pedal - the note should ring on. Yamaha models manage this but the Roland I tried killed the note as soon as I raised the pedal! Sorry for the explanation!!

I haven't tried the RG3 yet - seems to be in short supply in the UK, also quoted £8000!!!!
