Hi,

I would like to get a really inexpensive weighted keyboard that I can leave at work. I'm a beginning adult student.

I'd like the keys to be full size and weighted but it does not need to be an 88 key keyboard. A smaller number (52?) would be fine. I'd be listening with headphones and it doesn't even need to sound good. Just have weighted keys and work.

Used would be great. Ebay is fine.

Is there anything commonly available for under 100 bucks? 200 bucks?

Recommend a make and model if you can.

Thanks

Since you will be using headphones, you don't want speakers, correct? Also, does it need to have a dedicated stand, or do you already have something on which it can stand?

After taking a quick glance at websites and catalogs, it seems that the low end of weighted keys is around $300. At $300, you could opt for a casio px 110 (which is also one of the lightest to carry weighted boards, a definite plus). If you absolutely have to have a substantially weighted action, and you are not willing to stretch beyond a few hundred dollars, then you will have a hard time beating the Casio Privia line of digital pianos (the px-110 and its successors like the px-120, px-300 or px-200)

Note that it is almost impossible to find something that is weighted that is NOT 88 keys. Yamaha came out with the NP-30 ($300) not too long ago. It has 76 keys that are not actually weighted, but they have a a slight graduation from heavier to lighter moving from the left to the right. The fact that the keys aren't weighted allows this keyboard to weigh an impressive, back-pleasing 12 pounds!

I'll be listening on headphones so I don't need speakers. I have a place to set it so I don't need a stand.

Used and several years old is fine. I was hoping to hear, "model x by company z made an OK one in the late 90s and can be had cheap on Ebay".

This is just to practice when I can at work. "Nice" things have a way of being stolen around here so I don't want to bring anything that is more than 100 or 200 hundred bucks.

I started shopping around for a dp over the holidays. I think the long lasting keyboards from the 90s tend to be the console ones for homes that were very expensive to start with - you'll see people offering six to ten year old Clavinovas on craigslist for $600 to $1000 for example. I suggest considering all the budget versions of keyboards or discontinued models. For the Casios, you might look at used PX110s for example, or the Yamaha p70s. There may be people willing to sell these so they can upgrade to the new models. Can you get them for $100 to $200? I haven't seen that type of price except on ebay for broken ones (keys don't work, or some such problem). I bought a new Casio PX200 in February on sale for under $400. Other sellers of used boards were still asking at least $300 to $400, presumably to cover their initial investment or to help pay for a new board. Still, there are a lot of gigging musicians who may have old surplus boards that they'd love to get $100 to $200 for. Maybe try advertising in craigslist or places that gigging musicians visit/read.

Craigslist can be a great source of a good quality keyboard at a great price. But know your price first before making an offer. I think a number of musical items on craigslist can be over priced.
