I am interested in buying a digital piano for my kids. My budget is 1000. I found a used Kurzweil EP-500 for this price. This piano is 16 years old. Have digital pianos improved significantly in 16 years? What is their life span? I see you can get NEW digitals for $1000 but they "look" cheaper but possibly could sound better. Help?

Digital pianos are designed for durability,
reliability, and maintenance-free operation,
and so they can last indefinitely. I've
owned three digitals since 1989, and I've
never had a problem with any of them.
My very first digital, that I bought new
in 1989, my neighbor now has, and it's
still in perfect condition after all those
yrs.

If you open up any digital piano, all you'll
see inside is a few computer chips, and other
electrical components connected to the speakers
and keyboard with wires, that is, a digital
piano is essentially a computer with a keyboard
and speakers. Thus, they are influenced
by computer pricing, that is, used ones
lose value fast, like a used pc. A ten
yr. old dp, like a 10 yr. old pc, is
worth little, maybe a couple of hundred,
although it would play similar to a brand
new one costing thousands. Moreover,
as far back as the 1980's there were
already dp's that played similar to
today's, but like a 1980's vintage
pc, a dp from that era is essentially
worthless and you should be able to get
it for $100 or less.

A 16 yr. old dp would be considered ancient
in the fast-paced dp marketplace, although
it would play similar to today's dp's.
$1000 is way too much for it, no matter how
much it cost originally, or what it's
features are (for example, what would
a 16 yr. old pc be worth today?). The
maximum you could possibly pay for something
like that would be about $300, and that's
being very generous. Consider that you can
buy good, new dp's for $500-$900 today,
with much more advanced technology than
a 16 yr. old dp, and with full warranty
besides.

FYI - Response from Seller to my concerns (which were a summary of what you stated above):

The Kurzweil EP-500 is built in a true piano "case." The case is a real Young Chang upright piano. (Young Chang and Kurzweil got together to manufacture these, in fact this particular one was customized for the original owner.) To my knowledge, they are not produced anymore, probably due to manufacturing cost v. the majority of consumer budgets today. (In other words, there is a much smaller market for $10,000 digital pianos than the current cheaper mass-produced ones.) If the piano was simply a Kurzweil digital KEYBOARD for several thousand dollars in the 90s (not 80s), I would understand selling it for a few hundred now, in comparison to what is available today.
