Hi. On the sheet music of fur elise I've found... there are only pedal markings for the main theme... not for the cantando section, or the third section (with the staccato on the left hand A note).

But I've seen videos of people playing as well as recordings, where there seems to be pedaling throughout the whole piece. Can anyone clarify how it is supposed to be played?

Yes you can pedal those sections even though they don't have pedal markings, if you have a teacher they can tell you specific parts to pedal. I think with a lot of Beethoven works (ie. the sonatas) the pedalings will differ from one edition to the next but generally all the original Beethoven's pedal marking will stay the same. A good teacher will advise on which parts to pedal and which parts to not pedal. Or you can just study by watching the great pianists play the piece and figure out the pedaling yourself.

I just checked out a printed edition I have and the editor have put all the pedal markings in there. Let me know if you want to see the pedal markings for the part.

I have two very general rules for the pedal:

1) Use your ear
2) Don't let it get muddled. If it starts to muddle, refer to rule #1.
