This is one of several fake Horowitz items that have turned up on youtube. Others include Liszt's Hexameron and a "live" Kabalevsky No. 3. It's kind of the reverse of the Hatto thing. The posters know they can't pass off a Horowitz recording (even a bad one) as one of their own, so they take others and claim it's Horowitz.

The composers want performers be imaginative, in the direction of their thinking--not just robots, who execute orders.

I find this a little sad. Is this just idle nostalgia? I read in the NYT the music critic was arguing that the caliber of pianists just goes up and up, and that Hamelin and Volodos are the new vanguard of piano playing and that these days Cortot and the other virtuosos of old wouldn't even be able to compete. Maybe I just love the idea of the great pianists of the older guard, but its like their recordings just have something special and elusive that just makes my heart feel big.

I thought that rendition of Scarbo had a bit of a tinny tone - like it was meant to sound very articulated but it got a bit washed out and thin-sounding? I'm not sure that I love it. Then again Ivo Pogorelich does my personal be-all end-all of Scarbo so maybe no one else can please me anyway.

Me too. Have you heard Pascal Roge's Ondine?
