This is a little off the piano topic, but I think some may have stories relating. This next Tuesday I will be playing my syntheiser setup in front of a great number of professional theater organists at the American Theater Organ Societies' national convention. I recreate, (or try), the music of the 20-40's'. This will be my 6th convention as a performer, but I'm very nervous, as many concert artists will be performing during the week long event. My talent is very slim. Have you ever been in this situation? When is it time to retire? I will enjoy music and piano the rest of my life, but does the time come to lay back and enjoy? Let me reiterate, I'm not in their league.

Thetandyman, I'm sure you are better than you think... smile

Your performance will be great!

As for my own experiences, just wait until you mess up, big-time, while attempting to perform (play the piano and sing... at the same time) in front of 2500 people. Ouch!! laugh

I think I'll stick with YouTube... grin

Rick, you do great, I have no idea why I'm so nervous this time! I'm a wreck.
I can't wait until Wednesday, all behind me and heavily medicated! HAH. I feel my mind is telling me "hang it up"

Well, I did learn a valuable lesson... "the art of recovery". smile

Just enjoy the experience and consider it a good practice session. smile

Been there, done that. There is hardly a performer alive that hasn't had the feeling that they just aren't clicking and sometimes when they just make mistakes.

Interestingly, it is always advisable to have someone who can be totally blunt with you in the audience or record the performance. Many times it isn't as bad as you think it is "in the moment".

Good luck and have fun!

thetandyman,

Long ago, I was at a gig and a seasoned musician could see I was wound way too tight. He approached, then told me something simple, yet profound. He said; Everybody in the audience wants you to succeed. So give them a musical experience......they're rooting for you! I kept running that through my head, as if it were a broken record (yes, it worked).

Like others have mentioned, positive thinking wins the day. Please let us know how great it went! blob

To echo the fine earlier thoughts. You weren't asked to put on a show because "they" wanted to see you fail. Take a deep breath and savor the time- you have more of it than you will feel at the time.

Wasn't it Beehoven who said: Playing a wrong note is nothing, but playing without passion is unforgivable.

Embrace your nervousness. It's that kind of raw energy that can create a foundation for one of the best performances of your life. It's when we deny those feelings that things go wrong. One thing that works for me when performing in front of an audience that makes me nervous is to focus on how grateful I am to be able to play for these people. It takes the emphasis off of being concerned about sounding bad. Gratitude always beats fear in these situations.

I want to thank all the posters. The event was held last Tuesday, and I got through it. I played in front of about 470 Theater organists and enthusiasts. I'm still alive, so I guess I survived. Fortunately, I played syntheiser music from the 20=30= 40"s in a huge 1927 ballroom. No one complained, but I was so glad to pack up and depart for home. Thanks for all the posts!

Yeah!!!! Great job. Knew you were gonna pull it off. My father always enjoyed organ music. Besides his own organ we had all kinds of recordings of theater organ music. I really like Virgil Fox. Way to go!
