Long-time reader, first time poster :) Does anyone know if it would be possible to buy an old Silent Series Yamaha piano, and then replace the silent module (the black box) with the new SH module? (I presume these can be bought directly from Yamaha. Does anyone have the part number?) If this is possilbe, are there any limitations? For example, would it work with a very old Silent Series model? Thanks for your help guys! Elmo

Not likely. The system changes are more complicated then just the box.

Thanks for the quick response! Can I ask how you know this? It does appear that the new SH module brings lots of added functionality, but this all seems to me to be "in the box"/digital. I cannot see anything online to suggest that the actual physical silent mechanism (sensors etc) inside the piano has changed. Do you know how I might find this out? I have a Silent B Series piano from 2002/2003 that I would like to upgrade. If this is not possible, I would like to know if it would be possible with a later Silent model (e.g. from 2007).

Thanks for this. Useful to see people's views on the silent series in general and the benefits over purely digital pianos. I already own a silent series, so I am quite familiar with this. I have tested an SH silent in the shop and I love its added functionality. I wrote to Yamaha and asked if it is possible to retrofit an old silent series with a new SH module. They replied saying that you cannot fit the SH module onto any other model. It is not clear to me whether they say this because they do not want users doing this, or because it is simply not possible to do. If there is anyone out there who has experience of fitting or repairing Yamaha silent series pianos, I would appreciate an educated opinion on whether the technology inside the piano (the nuts, bolts and sensors etc, meaning, the way silent series pianos actually capture my performance) has changed. Or have all the improvements been to the box?
