I'm starting a new recording project of old hymms. Last time I recorded it was off a digital piano but now I have a 1941 Mason Hamlin grand so I'm trying to mic it up and using a software package to adjust some of the sound. I would be interested in feedback on the sound quality before I uses these settings across a range of songs.

Beautifully played, Marc. Well done.

The sound didn't come across as that great, mostly because the lower midrange and bass are a little too prominent, whereas the treble in comparison is not loud enough.

Unfortunately I am not a recording guru so I cannot give you any micing advice.

I enjoyed this and I'll look forward to your future recordings. smile

This sound in this recording comes across as being somewhat muffled. It's not just a case, I don't think, of over-use of the damper pedal; the overall tone quality is not clear.

I also have some difficulty with your timing irregularities, but that's not the issue here, I guess.

What size is the M&H? The only one I had a lot of experience with was a 7-foot (BB); it's tone was considerably richer than the one in your recording, although perhaps that can be considerably changed with mic placement.

Regards,

It sounds a bit heavy in the mid-range to me. Also, I hear a lot of mechanical noise. Maybe the mics are too close to the front of the piano or are touching the piano. It sounds slightly distant as well so the gain might be poorly set.

Thanks for the feedback.. I'll play with the equalizer function to see if I can get it better balanced. I was mic'ing from the belly of the piano to keep any mechanical sound out. Maybe I'll try to move it to the side to see if that lessens the noise.

I appreciate the constructive feedback.

The piano is a baby grand (5'4") so it may not have the depth you were expecting.
