I use Pianoteq, and I set my dynamic range to around 50 db, but I wonder: do headphones slightly compress the sound? Should the dynamic range be different, depending on whether you're using headphones or speakers?
I would imagine speakers are much more guilty of compression than headphones. Headphones are dealing with orders of magnitude lower power levels, so the voice coils probably don't heat up much, and they probably stay within a fairly linear operating zone.
That's my feeling too. I pretty much always use the headphones, the quality is better anyway. The studio monitors I have are okay ( KRK 6 inch sort of typical budget range that do very well for the price ), but I find so far I use them more for casual listening and as desktop speakers rather than playing.
Pretty much my daily routine I use the phones all the time. Only if I have someone come around or my missus want to have a quick listen I use them in that case, or sometimes I like using the speakers for a quick blast occasionally for my own pleasure, and want that room sound experience, but that's about it and quite rare.
