I remember I've seen study groups on the forums (I can't remember if it was ABF or pianist corner).

I'm interested in doing a study group for a piece if other people are interested as well. I love the idea of learning a piece with other people and giving each other suggestions on how to approach difficult sections.

Are there any pieces any of you would like to learn but need some help with? I prefer something from the Romantic-impressionist period but I'm open to suggestions. I'm also open to learning pieces of varying difficulty so if you have something easier/harder than the ones I've listed, I'd love to hear it too.

Let's all try to list some pieces and see if we get any overlapping pieces that a few people want to learn?

My list somewhat from most difficult to least by my own judgement:

Schumann/Liszt Widmung
Scriabin Prelude Op 11 No 11
Gluck Melodie from Orfeo (Sgambati transcription)
Chopin Nocturne in E minor Op 72 No 1
Debussy Golliwog's Cakewalk
Chopin Waltz in Ab Major Op 69 No 1
Bach Air on a G string (Siloti transcription)
Chopin Prelude in E minor Op 28 No 4

This is what I can think of off the top of my head right now. I'm totally open for suggestions as I only had a few pieces I could think of! I love to hear/learn new music I haven't heard of too so nothing is too obscure as long as we can find the sheet music somewhere!

I would do the Chopin Prelude in E minor Op 28 No 4 (last one on your list) since I've already been trying to learn it. Maybe it will get me to memorize it or at least get it to a passable level. It's overall pretty simple with the exception of those pesky few bars in the middle. I am sure people know which ones wink

Great! That would be cool! That prelude is deceptively simple looking but actually difficult to make it sound good because of its repetitive nature and repeating bass chords. Often it sounds too square and lacks a kind of musicality if you will.

I'm open to learning it, also I'm also open to making multiple study groups maybe for 2 or 3 different pieces.

Agree about the musicality of that prelude, it's tricky to give it dimension and have it sound less like a hammer.

If you have a good recording, I would love to hear it. This one on YouTube I really do NOT like:

I haven't listened to this particular prelude a lot. But I did just listen to one of the chopin competition contestants play it.

I've been toying with Op28 - 4 for a while too...
I'd be happy to join in a study group.

Yay, we have at least three now.
How do we approach this? Swap recordings and critique? That would be helpful I think.

Umm, Michiyo-Fir, I was just going through Recital 40 and have encountered your performance of the Nocturne in Eb Major Op. 9 No. 2.
WOW, it was simply beautiful. I love that piece, but at this point I think it is a little above my level. Someday!

I suppose I will make a study group for it!

InBoston, thanks for the kind comments on the Nocturne. I actually felt I could have played/recorded it better since I've been toying with it for the past few days and now I play it slightly differently than that recording.

It really is a lovely piece and I think it's the 2nd Chopin piece I ever learned as a child, and re-learnt as an adult.
